Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.

Yash Wade Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
MartinHafer "Wilfred" is one of the strangest television shows I've seen. Because of this originality, it's well worth watching. However, I should also point out that the show is very adult at times--with lots of crude, rude humor. Because of this, you probably don't want to let your kids see this one...and you might just decide this for yourself as well. The show consists of the bizarro adventures of a crazy young guy (Elijah Wood) and his next door neighbor's dog. How do you know he's crazy? Well, he's the only one who sees the dog as a guy in a dog suit and it talks to him and tells him to do many stupid things! Again and again, the advice the dog gives him (or that he imagine he gives him) is counter-productive and stupid...but he seems to keep doing it! The show is very fresh and clever and funny.UPDATE: A few days after I wrote this review, I saw quite a few more episodes of "Wilfred" and noticed that the show became more tiresome and disgusting. I am not saying I hate the show but the show has slumped a bit--hence my new score of 6 for the series. Too many inappropriately unfunny bits. I like edgy and even irreverent but often the show just goes too far to be funny.
CDTrannyLez ***Spoiler Alert*** I hate to give this show a low rating. It has credible actors like Elijah Wood, Dorian Brown, James Remar, Dwight Yoakum and Rutger Hauer. The show even manages to be occasionally amusing. My biggest gripe is that scary, creepy dog Wilfred. I mean what is he?!? A manifestation of Ryan's psychosis or something far worse? For me, Wilfred gives off a darkly sinister vibe, if not outright SATANIC. The way he acts, behaves and takes over Ryan's life is the way the DEVIL would trick his way onto a helpless victim. He turns Ryan into a drug addict, a jobless bum and worse, an antisocial deviant obsessed with a married woman. He encourages incest in Ryan towards his sister. Wilfred states he's happy that his brothers and sisters died inside a bag thrown in the ocean and the memory arouses him, I mean that's just diabolical! He makes Ryan engage in criminal and sordid behaviors like theft, armed robbery, assault & battery, vandalism, adultery and defecating in public. And when Ryan comes to his senses and tries to get his life back in order, that Demonic Dog Wilfred reels him back into a life of sin using "Wilfred-Lies" and "Wilfred-Manipulation". Throughout the whole season you have the characters involved in public urination, talking about feces and rubbing their private parts all over everything. Wilfred engages in atrocities like murder, attempted poisoning and copulating stuffed animals, he even causes the death of Ryan's father. The Wilfred/Devil makes tea using his owner's panties and tricks a single mom into acts beastiality and depravity. He joyfully admits to killing his owner's husband's dog and keeping the corpse. Ruby the Nurse hints to the fact that Wilfred is a hell spawn when she says, "he makes my bones rattle" and "that dog need to go back where he come from, the gates of hell!" In the next scene Ruby's conveniently killed. Its actually quite horrifying to watch this show when you understand what's really going on underneath the cute exterior. Most texts on this topic describe SATANISM as involving talking animals, engaging in putrid behavior with them and other atrocities as portrayed in this show. Remember, sin is desirable and attractive. Wilfred/Devil uses Ryan's weakness to manipulate him into a life of utter deviance. I expect the very last episode to have Wilfred/Devil taking off his doggy costume and revealing that he's actually LUCIFER and laughing at Ryan. And then while burning in Hades, Ryan would scream, "WHY?" And Wilfred/Devil would say, "you chose to commit those evil acts, I didn't make you do them, now pay the consequences, burn Ryan, HA HA HA HA HA!!!"
cslorch27 This show is so awful I created an IMDb account just to give this show a 1. Honestly this is not even worth discussing but this site requires me to type 10 lines. This show is honestly so bad I texted all of my friends to never watch this show. It was so awful it made me cry. I will pay whoever thinks they may watch this show to not watch this show solely for their own well being. Do you remember the Lord of the Rings? This is Frodo's worst. Never, ever, ever watch this or your Lord of The Rings visions will be destroyed. Because I saw this I no longer will watch the series. Elijah Wood has now been ruined and I will never watch any movie/TV series he is in. So God damn awful.
franChize da biggZ First of all i would like to reply to those intelligent people up there: So you calling the show stupid, while you are the ones that can't see further than pot smoking? The show has more meaning than you could understand. It's not about smoking or being funny the whole time, but it would require more brain power than you seem to have. If you want a dumb show you can actually enjoy (because you might get the fart jokes) go watch the original. This one has more meaning and better story.Wilfred is amazing, much better than the Aus version of it (however that was a different type of Wilfred). This show can get you thinking and also helps you realize everyday problems. Now you wonder, what could get me thinking about a show with a man and a man in a dog costume? Well for one it makes you ask a good question: What's real and what isn't? And how can you tell? This show is not about jokes, so if you are into that, don't even start watching this show... well, it has jokes, laughable moments and funny situations, but if you are in the same group as the above people then you wouldn't get those anyway.I rate it 9/10, but i gotta admit that the second season got some boring episodes. "This why good shows fall." meaning the more clever shows are uninteresting for the American people, like Pushing Daisies? People said it's a dumb show, just because it was beyond their level of intelligence. YOU are the reason why we get more dumb reality shows instead of quality shows. Thanks for that dumb people! example: SyFy has more wrestling and ghost hunting reality show than actual sci-fi...that on a channel meant to be science fiction only
