The Secret Life of the American Teenager Audience Reviews

Protraph Lack of good storyline.
Solidrariol Am I Missing Something?
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Yazmin Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
melanieboychuk I was bored one day and was trying to find a new series that I could watch. Nothing too serious, something I could just have on in the background while I'm working or drawing. Oh man... this show was a terrible, terrible decision. The first episode was okay and for some reason, I kept watching a few episodes because I had hope that the show would get better. It only continued to get worse. First of all, these kids are like, 15 and all they talk about is sex. I know that teenagers' hormones can get out of whack, but the overuse of the word "sex" is just embarrassing. I'm pretty sure I haven't used the word sex in a month as much as it's used within a single episode of the show. That's not even the worst part. The acting is awful, the writing is laughable (I'm 100% sure I could write a more eloquent script), and the characters are all annoying. The only character who is bearable is Ashley who seems to be the only semi-intelligent and mature one. Amy and Ashley's dad is an absolute jerk and acts like a 10 year old kid. He puts down his wife all the time and is just a horrible human being. Amy is also a moron and gets even more annoying as time goes on. Ben is a clingy and annoying kid who says "I love you" to Amy after what, one date? No one in this show is realistic. Every sad stereotype of teenage girls and teenage boys is represented in this show. Also, for some reason, literally everyone cheats on one another - also a really unrealistic portrayal of people. The teenagers also just think it's totally normal to discuss their great sex lives with their parents (what?! I'm 29 and would never do that) and sex is just so casual in this show. I could go on and on, but it's mostly the same thing explained different. So to recap, the characters are enraging, the acting is just sad and forced, and the script is just... there are no words. It's like the script is written 2 minutes before they shoot a screen. Improvised programs are better than this drivel. So, honestly, I would say avoid at all costs. I had to stop watching out of sheer annoyance of everything pertaining to this terrible failure of a show. How it lasted 5 seasons is beyond me.
Amelia R This is by no accounts a good show. The acting is bad, the characters barely tolerable, the plot line is repetitive, cliché, and at times just plain terrible. The only reason I gave this show 3 stars instead of 1 is because I have watched so many episodes despite the obvious and immediate flaws. Not sure if that says more about me than the quality of the show though...In any event, the things that are wrong with the show that I listed about pale in comparison to the real reason that I hate this show. When you first start watching, you see that the main character's (Amy's) mother and father have dark brown eyes while Amy and her sister both have light eyes. Okay, you may think to yourself after drawing a quick pundit square, this is somewhat unlikely but there could be a 50% chance of the offspring having light eyes when the parents have dark. However, as the show progresses, and you are introduced to the character of Adrian and her parents, you realize that her parents have bright blue eyes, while she has dark brown eyes. After drawing this pundit square, you may become angry, enraged even. The chance of the offspring having brown eyes is 0%. This is what got my goat. Finally, I am not sure why the writers of this show feel so compelled to make all plot lines revolve around sex and pregnancy. Every single episode, the words "sex" and "pregnant" are said in such great abundance, the words begin to lose all meaning--viewing of the entire series is sure to leave the viewer in a mental hospital, screaming the words "sex" and "pregnancy" over and over again, praying for a lobotomy so that they can finally forget these terribly overused words....
hannasmommy2006 This has to be the worst television show ever. While I haven't been a teenager for quite awhile, I do know these are no where near realistic portrayals of teens. In fact, the adults aren't realistic either. Even if the acting wasn't horrible, there is nothing likable about any of these characters. From Ben, (a character I'm assuming you're suppose to like) a controlling, obsessive, overbearing, jerk of a boyfriend (doesn't matter how often he says he loves Amy, he's constantly talking Amy into doing what HE wants), to Grace's father, who discusses patients with his wife, who then talks about those patients with their teenager daughter (real ethical, super Christians)! The show tries to preach abstinence, poorly, but it also seems like it's trying to make adoption a poor choice for the two teenage parents involved. There are so many problems with these story lines (that all have to do with sex, by the way)that it's impossible to list them all. I would advise to stay away from this poorly written, poorly acted show. It's dangerous for young impressionable kids, who may not realize this show is just a huge stereo type that does not portray real life and true consequences of choices. I can't believe this show was on as long it was. Yikes.
emily-68146 This show is great. I've watched it twice all five seasons on Netflix twice. The only complaint I have is that it got repetitive and some episodes were just far too dramatic. BUT I totally think they should have a spin off series where John is in high school and Grace, Adrian, Madison, and Lauren have kids going into high school or something like that. But definitely John, I think fans of the show would like seeing where John's life has gone. I'd like see Ricky happily married to someone, even if that person is Amy. Also, I would have liked to see more about Chloe, the girl that Leo took in after she was saved from the pimp. It's kinda odd that they'd introduce a character the last season and only have her in a few episodes.
