I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

If your looking for a series with a simplistic story line and the odd laughs here and there then watch this series. The series begins to drag on after the first few episodes with nothing to keep you inclined. The only reason I remained watching the series was because I was hoping it would take off. by the time you realize the series isn't going anywhere its already to late and too far into the series. Having watched ten's of long anime series this one happens to be the most shallow, This series had all the aspect and potential to be a great series but did not execute and rather turned out very mediocre.Overall, I recommend that those wishing to watch this series highly consider spending the time and effort in watching this anime, the series starts on a high a dramatically declines to a vague and bland ending. To finish this review on a high, the few yet quality comedy was well worth it, leaving me in fits of hysterical laughter. Though these moments were brief for this reason and this reason alone I'd suggest 'The Irresponsible Captain Tyler'. 6/10

I very much enjoyed this series but before I move onto the review I want to give you one very important warning DO NOT watch it unless you are prepared to sit through until the very end because even when I was on episode 25 of 26 I was still debating what kind of series was it? Serious and all about self exploration or just plain stupid and funny at times? The answer well it's neither Captain Tylor is very much its own series and even that I've warned you it will probably take watching ALL 26 episodes before you believe me.What I liked about this series was the character development and mainly how the actions of the main character reflected on all the others. The dynamic relationships between the Crew and the Captain, The Admiralty and the Captain, even The Enemy and the Captain are always changing and always brilliantly fun to watch. Not many series can pull off going from making you want to ring the main character's neck to absolutely falling in love with the little guy but this series manages to do it, to do it a lot, and yet keep it fresh each time. The graphics are a bit dated but still fairly good considering it is over a decade old and the music is also a bit old and possibly out of tune but still fun.All in all if you have the patience to watch the series, to just sit back and enjoy and to get over that urge to say "what the?" every few seconds and just let the series take you for a bit of a ride I have to say this is the series for you! Other recommendations: If you liked Dirty Pair Flash (I have only ever seen the second series) then you'll probably enjoy Tylor since the graphics are pretty close to comparable and it often contains the same goofy antics.

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is one of my favorite anime. It's nothing really special compared to many others. And there are a few points that do grate on the nerves (sometimes characters will repeat exactly what the last person just said, for instance). But that doesn't hurt the enjoyment for me. What speaks to me is found at the end. Tylor's philosophy, the code he lives his irresponsible life by, is one to really consider for a while. Also, there are moments in the series that are just fun to watch. Tylor will always escape peril, but never in a way one would expect. Just attempt to guess the end of an episode and you'll see what I mean.

I got the DVD on spec because it looked interesting that and it only cost me $80 plus shipping. The main character I can identify with as he is the nice guy slacker type. Imagine Vash the Stampede when he is being the lecherous goofy lay-about and you have one aspect of Tylor. The Character designs and types are familiar, especially the marine named Jason with his chainsaw & hockey mask and the alcoholic doctor. The animation looks dated by todays standards, but the show is from 1993 and we have had the clean stylised look of Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star to raise our expectations of anime. I will say this though, if you are planning to buy the box set or fourth volume wait a few weeks so that the new fourth discs will be in circulation, one of the episodes on this disc is missing a chapter - it is not on the disc at all.
