Ready Steady Go! is one of the UK's first rock/pop music television programmes and was a forerunner of MTV-type programming. It was conceived by Elkan Allan, head of Rediffusion TV. Allan was assisted by record producer/talent manager Vicki Wickham, who became the show's producer, and Michael Lindsay-Hogg who was appointed the show's director in 1965. It was broadcast from August 1963 until December 1966. It was produced by Associated-Rediffusion the weekday ITV contractor for London, called Rediffusion-London post 1964. The live show was eventually networked nationally. The show gained its highest ratings on 20 March 1964 when it featured the Beatles being interviewed and performing their songs "It Won't Be Long", "You Can't Do That" and "Can't Buy Me Love" - the last of which was a hit at the time. RSG! USA! was a Dick Clark production in 1964. A trademark infringement ended the show after six episodes. Its last episode was broadcast on 23 December 1966.

Ready Steady Go! Audience Reviews

Claire Dunne One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
didi-5 The ultimate 60s pop show presented by Keith Fordyce and Cathy MacGowan was a staple part of TV in the early part of the decade. It had a simple formula – to showcase artists from both the UK and USA (usually miming), alongside an audience who danced or stood around during the performances.MacGowan was an irritating, mini-skirted, giggler, while Fordyce would have looked more at home as an assistant in a furniture shop – still, it was a start and pre-dated Radio 1's Top of the Pops by a few years. Big names who appeared on Ready, Steady, Go, included Dusty Springfield, Del Shannon, the Animals, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Dave Berry. The theme tune was provided by Manfred Mann (the catchy 54321).Perhaps it was not the most inventive of music shows – and suffered from the miming aspect which made most artists look ridiculous as they lip synched to a track which resounded around the huge space miles away from where they were standing. It was hardly definitive but was the first attempt on British TV (after 6-5 Special) to provide a weekly showcase for the movers and shakers of popular music. As Cathy MacGowan would say, 'The weekend starts here …'.
sixstringscouser I'm only 17 years old so obviously I wasn't around to watch READY STEADY GO! when it was first transmitted! Duh! But watching the repeats of this show proves to me what a great decade the 1960s were for music with so many great bands performing such as The Beatles, Gerry And The Pacemakers, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, The Dave Clark Five etc. And also the likes of Donovan, Dusty Springfield and Bobby Vee. It's an excellent and nostalgic show to look back on and it gives you a great insight into the BEST MUSICAL DECADE EVER!!!!! 10/10
