It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

Just kidding with the title. I've only seen a little of Sex and the City and the first two seasons of girls, but the comparison is intentionally encouraged by the creator. I agree that characters are more narcissistic, but the show is not nearly as shallow as Sex and the City, from what I've seen. We've come to believe in our society that stark narcissism is the same as happiness and the key to success, when in fact, people who know anything about the actual disorder (not just the common term for obsession with ones own appearance) know that it's a guise for deep pain. Hannah does not seem to ever grow up and seems to be the most narcissistic of all. She only apologizes when she's late (profusely apparently), but otherwise she is highly presumptuous and sometimes treats the men she's with like she doesn't even see them. She manipulates her parents and the people around her, and it is painfully clear that she does this largely because she is bored or to have a story to write. Then there is Marnie, who is a lot more cocky than she puts on, and, even though I don't believe she really loves Alex in a romantic way, keeps him wrapped around her finger because she's afraid of being alone. It's not obvious that she does this on purpose, but I really think she does. I think, additionally, Alex puts Marnie on a pedestal and may not realize she might never really love him because he's too obsessed with how perfect he thinks she is and wants to be good enough for her. They are just the college couple that's too empty hearted without each other to admit they have to move on, just yet. Jessa is mostly just trying to fill the holes from her parents abandoning her. I love her, but she seems like she's so sure about herself at points, and then at other points makes it blatantly clear that she's broken and confused. Shoshanna is the least narcissistic of all and just seems to have a lot of anxiety. She calls out other people on their BS so quickly, it's almost epic, and it's thoroughly unexpected from her. Ray I don't think is developed enough yet for me to fully say. Although I believe he is cocky, I don't quite get him yet. Adam is weird, but his wisdom is under appreciated by everyone around him. Sometimes it seems like, even though he is the creepiest, most socially off character, he sees things more clearly than anyone else. I really like this show. I agree that sometimes it feels like nothing is happening in the show. Side note: one of Hannah's exes actually commented that about her writing, which I feel like pointed to some self awareness and a higher purpose for it. It's so strange because bad stuff is definitely going down and there are a ton of feels, but the characters act like it's so normal almost all of the time. If I experienced half of those issues, I don't know if I could be friends with a person anymore, but they all just stay in these toxic relationships squeezing them for all of their worth, until one of them runs off or sleeps with someone else. None of them can stand living with each other, expect for Shoshanna. And they will still come back to them later. I do think the show relies on sex more than it should for storyline, but it's interesting because, per another review, Sex and the City portrays sex as empowering and fun whereas this show conveys the real dark side it can have for women in their early 20s that is the opposite of that. They all do really have terrible love lives, to the point where it's a little extreme. But I don't find it altogether unrealistic. And I do think it's really funny at points. Later on it just got so depressing that I could hear they were making jokes that would normally be funny to me, but I was too sad to laugh. Altogether, I would recommend it to anyone, because, even if you don't like it, it's a pretty interesting commentary on young people's sexuality. You don't have to agree with what Lena is trying to convey, but it still makes you think.

Girls follows a group of young women (Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna) who are trying to find themselves in the world. In particular, it follows Hannah over the course of 5 years. Hannah is given the news in the first episode that her parents won't financially support her anymore and pay for her flat, this marks the beginning of a long journey of Hannah suddenly needing to take on responsibilities for her own life. We see her change so much throughout the seasons, and not at all... there's parts of Hannah and all the girls, (Even though they are strong women, creative with very unique personalities and they have a lot to offer the world.)they are still immature, impulsive, messy and lost and that's okay... that's life. It's what is amazing about this series, and that's the fact that is very true to life, it's true to how really young women are... which is not hugely represented accurately on television. Girls is about essentially "Girls" who are transitioning from being "Girls" into women and finding out how to handle adult life, which they do not do so well, and it's very humorous and cleverly written. However it's also very realistic if you ask me, nobody has it figured out in their 20s. It is a time which is suppose to be fun, which is portrayed in huge amounts as well, but nobody talks about the frustrations. As it is time where you are trying to build the life you want, and it doesn't always work out as it plan and the show does show that. It's refreshing to see. Girl's portrays friendships, relationships and sex in the same manner is it portrays life, very real, loving and heart-warming, and at other times, not so loving, hard and complicated. The girls seem to have met at some point during college and although their friendship is strong at times... And it's those times you go "I see why they are such good friends" but the majority of the time, the girls are in conflict, distant and cold to one another and sometimes don't understand why the remained friends, but regardless they support each other. We follow a very passionate and complicated relationships and very meaningless ones too.Girls is a bundle of fun and emotion, there are time it makes you smile, laugh out loud, and other times it makes you cry. It really makes you feel! which is what a great show does. The acting is excellent! Despite when it started none of these actors were very well known, all of the girls and guys really make their characters come to life, they are very complex and unique characters. Lena Dunham has really written and produced this well. And you can tell how much heart she has put into this show, it's very admirable. And with Judd Apatow being the producer, you know it's already gonna be a very funny and unique show. He did an amazing job as well. Hats of to all of them and this brilliant show.I am actually very sad it's ended. I could definitely watch more!

Just started watching this show I'm at season 1 episode 5, I personally LOVE this show. It's incredibly funny and extremely refreshing. It's quirky and almost every dialogue makes me smile like an idiot. The sex is also a lot more realistic than in other shows (Since most of the time sex can awful and unsatisfying, not earth-shattering like they portray on romantic movies and also, not everyone is built like a model.) I think people need to stop over analyzing the show and enjoy it for what it is; a heartfelt comedy about young women who traverse a complicated world filled with heartbreak and uncertainty with no one to lean on but each other. It's a unique take on an old idea and I will definitely stay tuned for more. PS---The girls look great in tights

You can't talk about Girls without mentioning the other 2 shows that involve 4 women who were friends, all in the East Coast, just from different chronological ages
Sex and the City and Golden Girls. Both were phenomenoms in their time that used humor, albeit dark humor, to address their generational themes. And then there's Girls
At first It looked like a wannabe that would fill in the shoes of those classics, and slowly over the years it was clear Girls was nothing like those shows, it actually reveled in its fierce opposition. Like those shows however, they involved an important 5th character
The city, in this case Brooklyn! When Girls debuted 6 years ago Brooklyn was entering its trend of becoming the next Manhattan, the show strongly banked on its surrounding to tell a story. However, the story that Girls told was about young women growing up and how messy it is mixed with all the realistic mistakes we make along the way. The show was raw and brutal and real, which made it relatable and frustrating at times. In the end, what it achieved was what it set out to do, introduce the voice of this generation or the "millennials" generation, it depicted them strongly and showed what it's like living as a girl in Brooklyn New York, how to navigate the professional world, the academic world, friendships, and romantic relationships ..plus lots and lots of naked Hannah lol. It showed us what it's like to mess up and get back up. Culturally the show had many strong stand alone episodes, usually the ones that focus on one specific character, for me the final 2 seasons, 5 and 6 were both a masterpiece. Each depicted the maturity of growing up and broke the mold that that previous 4 seasons had established. Whether you loved it or hated, you can't deny its strong cultural message and its unavoidable link to the other 2 classics it often gets compared to. The thing is, and to put it quite simply, before they were Golden Girls, there was Sex and the City and before Sex and the City there's the initial entry, GIRLS. A story that actually needed to be told and that was hilariously and honestly told, and for that it will always be remembered. In real life there are not always happy endings, friendships don't always survive, relationships don't always make it, things don't always make sense and sometimes, emotional heart warming moments are not what define human interactions. Girls brutally smaked the audience in the face with its brutal honesty and seriously unlikeable characters at times and it did it until the very end. I must say, its final episode was terribly unfulfilling, unsatisfying and incredibly disappointing and uninspiring. But I'll keep in mind as my finale the penultimate episode of the series for the closing shot.To sum GIRLS up in a dialogue between 2 of the ladies this easily summarizes the series brilliantly : "We were all doing our best"
"Our best was awful" "Worst best" Final Grade A
