Info

Another World is an American television soap opera that ran on NBC for 35 years from May 4, 1964 to June 25, 1999. Set in the fictional town of Bay City, the show in its early years opens with announcer Bill Wolff intoning its epigram, “We do not live in this world alone, but in a thousand other worlds,” which Phillips said represented the difference between “the world of events we live in, and the world of feelings and dreams that we strive for.” Another World focused less on the conventional drama of domestic life as seen in other soap operas, and more on exotic melodrama between families of different classes and philosophies.

Another World Audience Reviews

BroadcastChic Excellent, a Must See
Motompa Go in cold, and you're likely to emerge with your blood boiling. This has to be seen to be believed.
Rio Hayward All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Ella-May O'Brien Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
igrahamb Another World was the greatest single daytime drama during its heyday (the 1970s), written by the great Harding LeMay -- like Ryan's Hope, it was one of daytime's few attempts to show real people living real lives. It also hired some of daytime's greatest actors, such as Beverlee McKinsey, Douglass Watson, Constance Ford, Irene Dailey and many others.Unfortunately during the 1980s it took a downturn as it did what every other soap did -- try to emulate General Hospital. What worked on GH didn't work on AW. However, it still managed to maintain a consistent level of quality that was above and beyond most of the other soaps. Even in the 1990s, when it employed some ridiculous story lines, to be sure, it still managed to hold the viewer's attention with characters like Jake, Paulina, Vicky, Grant, and the superb acting of Charles Keating as Carl and his relationship with Rachel.Unfortunately NBC cancelled the show in order to pursue more youth-oriented programs such as Sunset Beach and Passions, which is television's worst show. It was a huge mistake (AW could have stayed on the air with Passions at 3:00), but luckily AW still enjoys a significant cult following and thanks to SoapNet, you can still catch reruns (if you're lucky enough to get it).
PATRICK1962 How well I remember this show from when I was a child...Jim & Mary; John & Pat; Walter & Lenore; Aunt Liz; Iris Carrington. The peak years were 1968-74, when the Alice-Steve-Rachel triangle dominated the show. That storyline really captured the viewers' attention and the actors (Jacqueline Courtney, George Reinholt and Robin Strasser followed by Victoria Wyndham)were well-cast. The show was expanded to an hour in 1975 (the first soap to do so), but popular cast members Virginia Dwyer, Reinholt and Courtney were all fired (Susan Sullivan exited at the same time)! The focus shifted to the Rachel-Mac-Iris conflict but was dealt a death blow in 1979 when it (incredibly) expanded to 90 minutes daily (the first 90-minute episode featured the death of long-time character John Randolph, played only by Michael M. Ryan since 1964). The show returned to the one-hour format a year and a half later (to accommodate it's spin-off, "Texas"), but it never recovered. It was sad when it was canceled in 1999. But many fans had long since abandoned it by that time.
horndogntx650 I started watching this show in 1984 when Sally and Catlin were in trouble and Cecile disappeared in the tunnel of love, they were all involved in the David Thatcher murder storyline - i was 13 years old in a new town and had no friends, the one friend i made watched Days of Our Lives, AW came on after it, I watched it for 15 years and was shocked it was cancelled! now i watch As The World Turns, this month is my 20th anniversary for watching a 1 hour soap continuously for 20 years! THANKS NBC FOR AIRING THIS SHOW, BUT SINCE YOU CANCELLED IT I NEVER WATCHED ANYTHING ELSE ON YOUR NETWORK EVER AGAIN! ERIC
leephilip73 Another World may be gone but it will never be forgotten by all its fans in the United Kingdom. The longest running American daytime drama to air in the United Kingdom was a blend of romance and high drama set in the fictional town of Bay City. Wonderful characters lived in this fictional city including the wonderfully evil Carl Hutchins who married the reformed Rachel Cory and became reformed himself. Other wonderful characters included Victoria Hudson-McKinnon played by the beautiful Jenson Buchanan who in my opinion is the best actress on daytime, Amanda Cory, Donna Love, Felicia Gallant, Cameron Sinclair and Cass Winthrop. The one error the show was to kill off Frankie Frame in 1996 as Cass and Frankie where the number one couple on daytime. Another World will live long in our memories.
