Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Leofwine_draca THE RIG is another nondescript monster-on-the-loose story, made foul by an almost non-existent budget and a distinct lack of imagination. Indeed, the paucity of creative energy is evident in this film's paint-by-numbers script, which tells exactly the same kind of story as has already been done dozens of times before by better directors with bigger budgets.In this one, the crew of an oil rig find themselves menaced by a monster from the ocean floor, although there aren't many explanations on offer. It all boils down to a man in a rubber suit – or what looks like a child in this case – running around and killing overacting cast members in slapdash ways. Attempts at poverty-row gore effects are pitiful and the acting from the no name cast is even worse, not that it mattered when the characters are so clichéd to begin with. The only actors I recognised were THE BRING remake's Art LaFleur and OUT FOR JUSTICE's William Forsythe, neither or whom can readily be described as stars.In the end, the things that really bring THE RIG down are the lack of money and the lack of experience on the part of the director. It just looks cheap and cheesy throughout, and not in a good way. There are no surprises, no well-directed scenes of suspense or action, just a mindless mess of watered-down and hackneyed scenarios done before and better.

GL84 When the crew of a storm-battered oil rig finds themselves being killed off one-by-one, they discover a giant creature has come on-board and have to fight it off before a rescue team can come get them.This must be one of the most disappointing efforts to come along, since the potential for this one to be awesome was frightening. When this one gets going there's some good parts here that really impresses, which starts with the really fun and graphic attacks here that are rather fun with the creature resorting to rather fun sneak attacks to make it rather enjoyable of it coming out of nowhere to launch a graphic attack. The ambush in the office and a later one in the pantry are the best attacks, the former for its suddenness while the later offers the greatest kill of the bunch, as well as providing the great launching point for the investigation into them being under attack. There's also the series of encounters hunting the creature running around the rig that's quite fun here, with these issues all coming together as this takes place in a creepy location with a creepy vibe during a time-period designed for letting loose with the atmosphere and an old-school style rubber monster get a great premise behind it. In the end, it doesn't mean any of it since there's just way too many flaws for the positives to go anywhere. Most shocking is the fact that the creature is so hidden from view that we barely get enough time to determine what it actually is, as no one provides any info about it nor is that expected, and that really damages this by never getting any solid answers for anything. We don't even get a full-on look at the creature to get a complete size and look of it, and the composite takes from it are of no help either at building up any kind of idea about it since the darkness during the attacks as well as the rapid quick-cut editing leaves even more to imagination. Another problem here is the fact that the creature attacks come so late which isn't all that much better as this one run through so much extraneous subplots and unnecessary scenes that really make up the biggest time killer here by featuring so much time wasting points in their life on the rig and the secrets they have it only proves how boring the beginning is. Even the action at the end when they're hunting it down is substandard due to the flimsy action that has to keep the creature hidden, emphasizing the other problems here while also cutting away for a lame subplot about the brother not wanting on the rig and a prologue longer than the actual finale to hammer home how ludicrously short it was. Which was too bad, as it could've been a golden monster movie.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity and a sex scene.

movieman_kev During a tropical storm, an assortment of badly written crew characters must deal with the rough weather as well as a mysterious creature who finds itself aboard the rig. Whenever 4 or more writers work on the same movie script, it's usually not a great sign (if said film is an anthology that rule doesn't apply, but this is not the case here) The plot is trite, the characters somehow cliché and bland at the same time, and the film as a whole is not nearly entertaining enough to make the huge detriments ignorable. wadechurton As you can see from the general tone of the user reviews, there is a great deal wrong with 'The Rig'. These are my additions to that corpus of knowledge. 1) If you're going to steal 'Alien', the least you can do is make your 'creature' look a bit different. Why is something which supposedly evolved at the bottom of the sea going to develop feet, legs or indeed a humanoid body at all? It's a guy in a suit, and all the editing in the world isn't going to disguise that. Not even if you dub on 'lizard-breathing' noises, which happens pretty much every time you see it. In fact, the only time the monster(s) make a noise is when they appear on the screen. 2) If you're going to steal 'The Thing', don't draw attention to it by having one of the characters describe the creature as 'The Thing'. That's just the sort of thing we viewers pick up on as the failed 'hide in plain sight' script gambit. Its intention is to cover up a blindingly obvious script deficit by attempting to be clever and 'postmodern' about it, but it never works. In all seriousness, even if you have a '10 for $10:00' hire deal and can't find one last DVD which looks even mildly interesting, think twice about 'The Rig', and keep thinking until you decide against it. You might need that 90 minutes for something more rewarding.
