Highly Overrated But Still Good

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

In times of military dictatorship in Brazil, a nun (Vera Gimenez) is arrested by an abusive detective (David Cardoso) after giving class to poor people in the slums of São Paulo. She is accused of subversion without any evidence and isolated in the jail without any communication with her family or friends; then she is tortured and submitted to all sort of humiliation to confess that she has political issues. However the detective has an unexpected reaction after many sessions of torture."A Freira e a Tortura" is an unpleasant, annoying and cheap exploitation of sex using the lack of human rights in a dark period of the Brazilian contemporary history. A foreigner or a Brazilian youngster that has not lived in those years of dictatorship may not understand the abusive behavior of the police, but this disrespectful procedure was very common in that period. However, the screenplay is ridiculous, with a sadistic plot and characters and an absurd resolution. The abnormal, stupid and stereotyped characters are shallow and the jailer and his assistant are irritating with their chuckles. The bombshell Vera Gimenez in the role of a nun without costume is funny and the pretentious and ham David Cardoso is awful. Vera Gimenez naked is disappointing since she is sexy with a beautiful face but having flaccid butt and the short in all aspects David Cardoso naked is hilarious. My vote is one.Title (Brazil): "A Freira e a Tortura" ("The Nun and the Torture")
