Nice effects though.

The film was still a fun one that will make you laugh and have you leaving the theater feeling like you just stole something valuable and got away with it.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Once again we have a film detailing a mission to Mars that goes awfully wrong and once again the film's antagonist of choice is the zombie. Zombies on Mars? Did nobody watch John Carpenter's GHOSTS OF MARS and think that, you know, maybe that wasn't such a good idea? I've seen a few movies detailing catastrophic trips to Mars now (RED PLANET is my favourite of a rather average bunch, it has be said) but THE LAST DAYS ON MARS isn't one of the better ones. The problems with the film are twofold. First off, the script is entirely derivative and the writer seems to think that we won't notice that it rips off ALIEN quite extensively, albeit with a little PROMETHEUS-inspired modernising. Secondly, the direction is terrible. The dialogue scenes are okay but as soon as the action hits, the director opts for awful shaky-cam work that detracts from the experience, and pointlessly jumbled editing that makes the whole thing rather confusing. Giving control of this film to a first time director wasn't a very clever idea. Those were the bad things but there is some good stuff here, namely the film's cast. The reliable old-timer Elias Koteas has a predictable role as the group leader but he's typically efficient in the part. Romola Garai is surprisingly good as she always is in her performances. I didn't used to care for Liev Schreiber very much but he has been growing on me recently. Olivia Williams, Tom Cullen, and Yusra Warsama aren't really very good at all but they don't get too much screen time and Johnny Harris builds on the creepy persona he had in the THIS IS ENGLAND TV series. The film does have a good pacing and there are few slow spots so it's just a pity that what does take place on screen is so derivative. I liked the look of the zombies as it's pretty scary but the action is predictable and you can guess the ending from the outset. Plus I was never convinced that the film really was taking place on Mars as it looks much more like the Jordanian desert. Couldn't they have given it a red filter or something?

So a group of astronauts are exploring Mars and just before they are about to leave, a disaster strikes. Sound familiar? Yeah, watching the first act of this film is eerily similar to The Martian, especially considering that this film came out a few years before that Ridley Scott masterpiece. Don't worry though, the second and thirds acts take a whole different direction and the initial setup is generic enough that there bound to be a few films similar with one another. So, what about those two acts that follow? I liked them. The idea is once again perhaps a bit generic, but it's done well and you don't usually see these types of tropes in space. Or, at least I haven't seen them. The horror is effective and the claustrophobic essence of space is utilized well to the film's advantage, as is the harshness of Martian landscape. The biggest thing holding this film back for me is the fact that the actors are not really all that top notch. This could have been a much better film with a few A-list names to really sell the horror, the loneliness and the growing despair of having literally no way out. Now we have Liev Schreiber, who's at least memorable, which is more than can be said about the rest of the cast.Still, that simply means that it's an average experience, instead of a great one. If space horror tickles your fancy, I'd give this one a watch.

This was by far the most crappiest of the Mars movies ever made! And there were Mars movies which actually had Matt Daemon growing food out of actual crap... but this movie had more crap than that movie. The plot was stupid... there was no scientific explanation given behind why a bacteria would turn people into zombies.Acting was horrible and flat, with almost zero range of emotions. The set was a shoddy rip-off off the movie Alien. The story was nonsensical! Even after knowing that the zombies would attack them and turn them, most of the crew would just stand there instead of running away, or try to talk to zombies.. or shout NO! NO!I mean, when a zombie attacks you, you run, you don't stand and scream NO! NO!Stupid story writing, worst acting, crappy interpersonal interactions between the crew.Don't waste your time on this pathetic movie!

It could be argued that Last Days Of Mars has at least passing similarities to 'Ghosts Of Mars', 'The Thing' and many other films besides. And as others have said, essentially it's a zombie film, probably more akin in some ways to the T-Virus in Resident Evil.So with that said, why would I give it a 7 ? Well, it's not really a bad film at all. Could argue that the characters could have been better written, but that's a common complaint with many movies (some of which have far higher ratings on IMDb).And for 7 million, it's really well put together. Good CG-I, some good acting and many times feels like a far higher budget effort. All I can say is, if you like older style sci-fi films, or like zombies, then give this a go and don't be put off by the low rating.
