BoardChiri Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
lightlikecoolwhip I had skipped over this one plenty of times throughout the years and suddenly just decided to watch it, and I'm glad I did. The tension and chemistry between the main couple kept me glued to the screen, especially whenever their tiny baby is in danger. It was never cheesy, which can be a rare quality in indie horror movies. The atmosphere is what kept me feeling tense throughout this movie, not necessarily a specific monster, and that was the brilliant part. I felt like I was experiencing the horror with them, not just watching it happen to them.
Clive Desmond The hallow is a fairly typical horror movie, family stays in a secluded house surrounded by a forest and strange things start to happen. Despite this however it is still an enjoyable film to watch and the monsters are somewhat original. The atmosphere of the film is tense and is mildly scary for those of us horror fanatics. The acting was decent although at some stages the script leaves a little something to be desired. The make up and special effects teams are both to be applauded, great effects. There wasn't any real character development besides seeing how the characters react to the situations thrown at them. I did feel that the film was slightly dragged out and could've done with a few unimportant scenes being edited out. Overall though its a good one watch film.
danayoung-00554 This was not to bad it did lack in some areas but the movie had a good feel to it.Good acting beautifully shot and not bad jump scares. I think it was filmed in Ireland as it was very green but that made it look cool.I feel it could have been better but it was not awful. I did like the scene in the car with the baby that was tense and fearful. Not big names in this but they did OK with the material.Worth a watch on a rainy afternoon with a coffee.I would tell my mates to give it a watch if they had 85 minutes to spare. The ending was a good idea though! Better than most crap that is out there though! The main actors did what they were suppose to do with the limited story. At the end of the day an OK horror to give a go. Reminds me of Antichrist in areas.
Leofwine_draca THE HALLOW is yet another Irish horror film about a young family who move to the Irish wilds and are soon assailed by local folklore. Upon watching this low budget horror I was immediately reminded of 2014's FROM THE DARK, which has almost exactly the same premise. The two films are extremely similar and although THE HALLOW is the better-made of the two, it rips off FROM THE DARK quite extensively in terms of look, feel, and plot ingredients. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that fact.I don't mind low budget horrors but so many are being made today that they really have to offer something different or special in order just to stand out from the crowd. THE HALLOW doesn't. The early atmosphere building stuff is quite good and intense in places, but in the second half things fall apart with one cliché scene after the next. I wish scriptwriters would give up chronicling the exact same twists and events in every script and try something different for a change. As for the creatures, they're little different from Gollum or the ones in THE DESCENT.Still, the direction of this film is quite good, and the cast are decent. Joseph Mawle has been a solid presence in film and TV for about a decade or so now and doesn't disappoint. Bojana Novakovic (EDGE OF DARKNESS) does the best she can with an underwritten role. Michael McElhatton and Michael Smiley are both excellent in support although they needed bigger roles more important to the storyline. THE HALLOW is no masterpiece but it does pass the time, I just wish with the resources they had they'd made something better - and more original.
