In 1985 writer/director Terry Gilliam gave us the film "Brazil", the story of a humble civic servant caught in the web of a dystopia society. The enigmatic fantasies manifested in the mind of our protagonist is a gave a hint of hope in an otherwise hopeless dimension. Six years later, Gilliam directs, "The Fisher King" which also looks into the eyes a deranged man who's lost in his own world, oblivious to the real world. Of course as a protocol, if anyone who lives in a fantasy dream world and is not afraid to speak out of it, you will easily be dismissed as a delusional lunatic. But every once in a while, some humans being will embrace that person's delusions even if it's to cover up one's faults.Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) is that man. We first meet Jack as a cynical, self-absorbed radio jockey who couldn't care less about anyone or anything. His ego has climbed to epic proportions, as he truly represents what every other person walking this Earth represents. He has his own desires and knows how to get them and never has to go back on his steps. But eventually the lesson here is that the largest of egos can abound to become deflated. His world comes crashing down when he lends his voice that led to a violent murder frenzy. Three years later, Jack now demoted to working at a video store with his girlfriend Anne (Mercedes Ruehl), spends most of time inebriated and feeling that his life is not worth living decides to contemplate suicide, but in a sudden burst of irony, he is rescued by a homeless guy who goes by the name of Parry (Robin Williams), a former teacher, now has become a catatonic homeless guy who thinks he's a knight in search of the Holy Grail and asks Jack to help him in his quest. At first, Jack refuses to have anything to do with this nutty man, but after going through some research to discover that like him, Parry has lost faith in himself and has sunk into an even sadder path than him. In addition to that he feels that by committing a selfless act, he can help rectify the problems he's trying to overcome. This might be about Jack's ego, trying to better himself, But Parry's whims are very unsettling at times and his erratic behaviour can drive anybody insane, Jack makes strides actually helping this man, rather than playing along with this looney. Many fans can dismiss Parry as a crazy street bum, much like Jack as a egocentric jerk, but both characters embody a character study with plenty of layers within their psyche. Parry has created this fantasy where he's a knight on a quest where it's used as an escape to hide from the cruel world that was brought onto him. But when you think about it, isn't stories and fantasies are intended for? The world is a very cruel place and by creating characters and images, we all have to find ways to distract ourselves in once in a while. Does that makes crazy? If so, than so be it. When you think about the things that we suffer from can reflect on our storytelling abilities. Jack has no clue was what Parry is talking about or who this Red Knight he keeps mentioning. Jack doesn't realize is that this quest is also a reflection of what he's trying to accomplish, trying to turn two negatives (Jack and Parry's current states) into something positive and Jack sees something he's never seen before in his life, a silver dawning of a new person. Just doing a world of good isn't the way to go about this. It's more than that. It's a commitment to eternally promise that you will change your ways and never forget those who helped you along the way. And that is exactly what Jack understands as the film progresses and to help another down-trodden individual is the way to go, so for that we can actually relate to Jack because we all have a little Jack in all of us. Sure we as humans can be selfish if we wanted to, but then there are other times where we can commit selfless acts if when given the opportunity or commitment to do good things. Jack isn't just annoyed by Parry's behavioural patterns, he's upset as to why Parry chose him on his quest, let alone save him from self-destruction while offering the meagre cash in his possession. Love doesn't come from what's inside your wallet, but what's inside your heart. If Jack were to understand this, than maybe he could find reasons to love himself and put a disclosure to the error he committed years ago. "The Fisher King" is a subliminal metaphoric film that powerfully illustrates how one selfless act could seal the gaps from one's troubled past in hopes to turn one's life around.

This is my first review and I just watched The Fisher King for the first time.As a huge fan of both Bridges and Williams, I thought to give this one a chance, even though I've never heard anything about that movie before (I'm from Germany, guess it's not popular here at all)Starting with a totally different Bridges character, (compared to the Dude) adding a fantastic Williams (who would've thought of that..) and gently putting the delicious Michael Jeter and Mercedes Ruehl cherry on top - would be the recipe for a great movie.And it was, and I enjoyed every single minute of it. It's one of those movies that makes you think about our society, lives and world in general. There's a philosophical meaning behind it as well. All in all I'm overwhelmed by all of its actors, writing, directing and cinematography Definitely gonna watch it a few times more.Highly recommended

The Fisherking At school we watched a movie in class. It was the movie "The Fisherking". It is a movie about jack who becomes very good friends with an sort of homeless guy parry. Jack feels guilty for the lost of parry wife. And to feel less guilty jack helps parry in his search for the holy grail. The Fisherking is a movie based on the story of the knight parzival. It is a part of the parzival story brought in a nowadays jacket. In the beginning of the movie I thought it was a little bit slow and boring but a little later in the movie it became very nice and not boring at all. The role of jack is played by Jeff Bridges. The role of Parry is played by the great actor Robin Williams, who sadly past away in 2014. Robin Williams plays the roll of parry perfect. In the movie he really becomes parry. But also Jeff bridges plays the role of jack very good. The Fisherking is a mix of drama with also a lot of humor. It is a very good movie with a real strong and good story. I highly recommend this movie. That's why my rating for this movie is an 8 out of 10.
