The life of the revered 18th-century Armenian poet and musician Sayat-Nova. Portraying events in the life of the artist from childhood up to his death, the movie addresses in particular his relationships with women, including his muse. The production tells Sayat-Nova's dramatic story by using both his poems and largely still camerawork, creating a work hailed as revolutionary by Mikhail Vartanov.

The Color of Pomegranates Audience Reviews

Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
Jonah Abbott There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Jackson Booth-Millard This was another foreign film I found listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, as with many of the other titles I watched previously I didn't know what to expect, but I hoped for the best with this Armenian/Soviet Union film. Basically this film is supposed to be a biographical piece about Armenian poet Arutiun Sayadin, formerly the apprentice of a carpet weaver who rose to become first the court minstrel Sayat Nova ("the king of song"), and then an archbishop. But the film is much more surreal and obscure than that, and there seems to be hardly any real plot at all, it is simply a series of fascinating imagery, including by the leading actress Sofiko Chiaureli, playing both male and female characters. Rather than focusing on the depiction of actual events of the real person involved, the film is a depiction and symbolisation of the many ideas written in Sayadin's poetry, the actors on screen dress up and create things to portray religious iconography and nationalist folklore as big art pieces and illustrations. Starring Sofiko Chiaureli as Poet as a Youth / Poet's Love / Poet's Muse / Mime / Angel of Resurrection, Vilen Galstyan as Poet in the cloister, Melkon Alekyan as Poet as a child and Giorgi Gegechkori as Poet as an old man. The title comes from the fact that there are pomegranates seen on screen, and specifically the colour of them, the red colour is seen on screen in many of the artistic visuals, this film works especially well if you have keen eye or interest in art, you will not necessarily be able to decipher the ideas behind what is created in each scene, but it is a remarkable and beautiful biographical drama. Very good!
rucricket I had never heard of this film when I got it as a present. I didn't look it up and so was completely unprepared for what was to come. I had expected an interesting and intellectual film from what my father said, but ended up being blown away by the directors fabulous style and unparalleled techniques.Almost like a silent film, this film works at portraying the life of the poet, and the director, through images taken from his poetry. Beginning with the juice of a pomegranate spreading across a cloth in the shape of Armenia, this really sets up the rest of the film. Relying on very simple camera movements, the director creates a surreal view which even Dali would have struggled with. Yet, he manages to get across a number of things about the poets life through heavy use of symbolism. Snail shells, strange floating balls, all mean something, whether it be life force, sex, death and so on.But what I have said cannot prepare you for what comes. It really is not a film which is easy to review. you must just go and view it for yourself. I'm sure many will find it pretentious and I won't lie, it is. But ignore this and you will be left speechless. Having seen this film, it makes you wonder what it would have been like if it wasn't for soviet interruption. I haven't done it justice in any sense so I will stop now and let you go and see it.8.9
galeleo-1 The Color of Pomegranates is the worst film I've ever seen. I made it through 15 minutes. I wanted to slit my throat. You can't call it a movie because it doesn't move. It is a succession of still photographs, each one remaining on the screen for 5 seconds. A shot of the ground, a shot of a window, a shot of a flower, a shot of a face, etc.. It's endless and tedious torture. I don't know which is worse - Andy Warhol's "Empire State Building" or this one. At least his movie has some action in it. Suspense is out of the question, except I will always wonder if the rest of the so-called movie is the same. But, thankfully, I will never know. It's a true shame because maybe Sayat Nova is a great poem and I'll never know or care. Groundbreaking cinema? Anyone with a scanner and the rudiments of Final Cut Pro could assemble this disaster.
Barbara I now know what it feels like being insane. If my life and perceptions were close to this, I would wish for death. I like surrealism, but could not stomach this. It was pure torture and grief and by the end I was weary. If the purpose of cinema was to bore, torture and wear you out, this would be the king of films. If there are people coming over who you want to get rid of, I guarantee the effectiveness of this movie. Why the nails-on-a-chalkboard music alone made me want to poke out my ears. My only consolation was that odor has not been built into movies.Like beating you head against a wall, it is so wonderful when it is over.Enjoy Chis
