It is not only a funny movie, but it allows a great amount of joy for anyone who watches it.

It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

This is a 6-minute short film by Polish animation director Tomasz Baginski. He made this one only in his mid-20s as it was an early career effort by him and this is also the movie that got him the Academy Awards nomination. However, I personally believe that this is not his best work and that he improved steadily during his career. It is a bit sad to see that he has not yet made a feature film. But he is still not even 40, so it may happen one day. This could easily become one of the best animated films of the year. He certainly has the talent. And even if I do not consider this film his best, I would have been fine with it winning the Academy Award. But for some reason, they awarded the very forgettable Chubbchubbs that year."Katedra" is brilliantly animated and it must be quite an experience to watch it on the big screen unfortunately one that nobody will ever have again. There is not too much action, it's all about the style and the atmosphere. The music helps it too. The last 90 minutes, however, are packed with action then, maybe to make up for the first 5 minutes where not really a lot is happening. It's certainly worth a watch. Recommended and please Mr. Baginski give us that feature film at some point..

I have seen countless animated, CGI, or live short films. Yet, nothing was like Katedra or The Cathedral. It's maybe the best of them all. This time, not a movie, but a piece of art, could brilliantly summarize the human's journey on earth. So how about being a 7 minutes long as well ! There is a certain poetic pace, making the whole thing very special. The moment of losing the arm is as unforgettable as the most painful moment you had. And the final shot is sublime, just sublime, giving you the confirmation that you're watching a true great work. It's a film that leaves you dazzled with all the meanings of the word.I can't find out what could be the best of it; is it the design of the pilgrim's character?, is it the idea of The Cathedral itself as a holy center for all the human development ?, is it the music of the end ?, or is it the finale with its profoundly rousing spectacle in which all the human's power, abilities, age and self contribute to add just a small step towards a noble, unreached, aim ? I think it's one of the times when the best of the movie is the whole movie. As for the Oscar, let me gird up my loins. Firstly I was shocked when I knew that The Cathedral lost. But the shock of knowing that (The Chubbchubbs) was the one which won made me so mad! There is absolutely no comparison between the 2. Actually (The Chubbchubbs) can't be nominated in the first place, especially when The Cathedral is around!I don't trust the Oscar, or any other award for that matter, but when it comes to preferring a joke of a movie, or – at best – a show reel of a company's characters such as (Chubbchubbs) over this film then it's a partiality, stupidity, or sheer blindness, whatever the name of the crime is !Some films don't need any Oscar to be immortal. This one is on the top of them.

On a far distant planet stands a immense cathedral, seemingly derelict and lifeless. A solitary traveler stands before the crumbling columns, silently watching and waiting. The film leaves countless questions unanswered, its dialogue-free script allowing for the visuals and music to tell the story, and for the viewer to fill in the blanks. Where is this beautiful planet? Who is this lone traveler? Why has he made this pilgrimage to such a remote cathedral? Indeed, who actually built this cathedral, and for how long has it stood here?Tomek Baginski's animated short film, 'Katedra / The Cathedral,' is a fascinating and visually-stunning journey into the unknown, and a philosophical exploration of the nature of religion. It is based upon Jacek Dukaj's short story of the same name, and was created using 3ds Max, a full-featured 3D graphics application developed by Autodesk Media and Entertainment. The CGI visuals, which allegedly took three years to produce, are nothing short of perfect, every frame as beautiful as the last. With no dialogue to speak of, 'Katedra' also relies heavily on its choice of music, and the steadily-building electronic track used during the film's climax is wonderfully rousing. The conclusion itself is worthy of some discussion, though I'll stop short of giving away what actually happens. What could this ending actually be implying? That a religion is comprised solely of its believers? Could the pilgrim's faith have allowed him to become a part of something wonderful and glorious? This, of course, is without considering whether or not the traveler knew what was about to happen when the sun made its dazzling appearance. Whatever your interpretation, there's no denying that this film is simply a thing of beauty.

This film is absolutely amazing. This is one of those categorys at the Oscars you don't pay much attention to. When are you ever going to see any of these? Besides, I am hungry so forget this, I am going to the fridge. And I would have this year, had I not seen this truly stunning peace. A friend of mine went to college with the director of this movie. He told me about it and got a copy for me to view. Honestly, it is absolutely stunning and is by far the best computer animation I have ever seen. The thing is a mere 7 minutes long, yet it took more then 3 years to make. A true peace of art. If you can find this anywhere, take the time and enjoy it.
