Mischa Redfern I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
preppy-3 Mega bomb that chronicles the life of Broadway legend Gertrude Lawrence from the 1930s to the 1940s. Julie Andrews plays the title role. This cost a lot of money to make but it bombed badly. It's easy to see why. Andrews plays Lawrence as a shrill obnoxious woman very full of herself. While that may be factually correct it's not someone you want to spend three hours with. Also the movie is frankly dull. When there's no musical number on the movie comes to a screeching halt and dull dramatic scenes come on. Also this rambles on for three hours! On the plus side Daniel Massey throws in an Oscar-nominated performance as Noel Coward. He's great! Also all the songs are good and there are eye-popping production numbers. And Andrews wears some beautiful costumes all through the movie. Every scene she has on a different glamorous outfit! Still it doesn't work due to Andrews. She plays her character as such an obnoxious witch that you don't care. Worth seeing for Massey and the musical numbers only.
Wizard-8 "Star!" was one of the most notorious financial bombs of the 1960s, the main reason probably being that when it was released the public was getting tired of musicals. Certainly, the movie itself has some faults that may not have attracted some audiences. The movie is both too long and not long enough, for one thing. It's kind of tough to sit through a movie that's almost three hours long. And curiously, despite this long running time, the portrait of Gertrude Lawrence seems unfinished. We don't really get to see what is driving this woman. And her personal life is only lightly looked at, such as the fact that while she had a daughter, this daughter character has hardly any time devoted to her.But the movie also has its share of strengths. The performances are very good, the strongest being that of (no surprise) Julie Andrews. She puts so much enthusiasm into her role that it does help make up for her somewhat shallowly written character. And the musical numbers sprinkled throughout are indeed excellent, with some great choreography mixed in as well. Fans of movie musicals will probably embrace this movie the best, but the movie does have some genuine appeal to other people as well, if they are patient enough to sit through almost 180 minutes of film that isn't perfect.
williwaw Robert Wise's I Want To Live is a classic film and one of my favorite films. In a great career Robert Wise worked with Lancaster, Gable, Hayward, McQueen, et al, and of course the star of this film Julie Andrews. As a fan of Robert Wise I was in disbelief this talented Director was associated with Star!. Many probably never even heard of Gertrude Lawrence and Julie Andrews does nothing in this film to acquaint anyone with anyone much less a legendary performer Gertrude Lawrence. I rarely post negative posts but hard as I try I cannot find much to praise in this film. Robert Wise directed the sensational West Side Story falls flat here, and musical numbers are boring, and Ms. Andrews who at the time of the filming was the Number One female box office star in Hollywood is totally without grace and charm in this film. 20th Century Fox's "Star" is a pure vanity production to Ms. Andrews. Soon followed another Julie Andrews vanity production flop Paramount's Darling Lili co starring Rock Hudson, and Julie Andrews' star dimmed. I did however like to see Anthony Eisley of the Warner Bros. stock company in a small role.Boring Star!I do not recommend this film.
petersj-2 I can't help it. I confess that I love Star. Gertrude Lawrence was not much of a singer but Julie is, so do not expect any accuracy. Julie came in for a lot of flack in this picture and she hardly deserved it.The critics here exclaimed "Julie misses the point" But this was a time where musicals were not that popular with trendy critics who seemed to love attacking musicals. I argue that they all wanted another Sound Of music. It is a pity that it did not get a better deal although it has been revived a few times in a cinema here and audiences are warming to it. Its not the first time a film has been misjudged or under rated. Julie is delightful and she is indeed a true star but Daniel Massey is a marvelous NoelCoward. Richard Crenna is beautiful and as he always was very easy on the eye. I think it was made at the time when musicals were starting to lose favor which is very sad. I miss the musical and while I love Chicago and Dreamgirls I must admit that I miss the big musical and admittedly old fashioned musicals like Star. Getrude Lawrence was a fascinating woman but I don't think Star should be seen a biopic. The stage was where she really belonged, Julie makes the film a very pleasant diversion.
