Softwing Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Gino Cox "Soul Plane" takes aim at racial, ethnic and sexual stereotypes and ridicules them adroitly. Some will doubtlessly find some of the humor offensive. Some may find nearly all the humor offensive. Much is based on racial and ethnic stereotypes, homosexuals and various sexual practices and fixations, but the humor is not mean spirited or vicious. Considering that, for example, the inciting incident occurs in an airplane restroom, but avoids both gratuitous nudity and scatological sight gags, one might even argue that the humor is more restrained than many R-rated comedies. Even if one were to excise all the racial, ethnic and sexual humor, there would be still be a lot of jokes about airline service and other topics. One cannot fault the film for any lack of comedic material. The filmmakers employ a broad range of comic devices, including sight gags, 1-2-3 punches, slapstick, pratfalls, ridicule, absurdities and comic irony. Some is actually very subtle, particularly some of the jibes at poor airline service. I particularly appreciated a sight gag about overhead bins. While much of the content is outrageous and decidedly shy of politically correct, the jokes never seem forced, which is a credit to both the writers and the ensemble cast who are committed to their roles and never step out of character or wink at the audience or seem uncomfortable with the material.The cast is much larger than currently credited on IMDb, with a lot of talented performers such as Terry Crews. Production values are adequate. The B story is effective. A subplot concerning the brother is serviceable. The film is not for those who are easily offended or whose preferences are limited to family-oriented fare. But those who enjoy broad humor will find ample sources of amusement.

jessegehrig Is Soul Plane mad at me? Did I take something from Soul Plane without asking, or did I cut in line in front of Soul Plane? I ask cause Soul Plane seems weird, like really mad, and I'm all like 'Soul Plane I didn't do sh*t to you why are you acting all messed up?' Soul Plane just looks away in the other direction all stoic like I'm not talking to your f*cking face Soul Plane. For the record, I had nothing to do with this movie. I did NOT write it, I did NOT direct it, I did NOT cast this movie nor did I have any any any anything to do with the book this movie must be based on. Can you imagine the Soul Plane book? Lengthy descriptions about booty, and long chapters devoted to the various details of a brother's suit? Can you put gold rims on a book? A lift kit on a book, put in some sub-woofers, get some bass in that book?

thirstypony To be honest, this movie was not as bad as the countless reviews have been saying, so I'll be nice and give this a 5. It was an entertaining film, mostly because of the infused hip-hop dance jams used, but for the humor of the movie? Eh…not so much. Very crude, nasty, derogatory jokes only go so far before you can't bear to hear or see anymore. One of the very first scenes where the guy gets stuck in the toilet and nasty bathroom related sound effects are used almost ended it for me there. The countless stereotypes (black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, homosexual) is the director thinking "Hey,if we mix all of these different styles of people together and poke fun at them we can get a funny movie!" The movie is about as funny as a picture of Joan Rivers in a bathing suit.This movie gives the black culture a bad name and even Snoop Dog couldn't save it. The special effects guy must have been asleep at the switch because they were plane (pun intended) awful. Monique was hilarious in this film acting like her usual "Oooh, you go girl!" self; everyone else just sucked. What's sad is that towards the end the film decided to get serious and incorporated a love story involving the father and daughter which seemed ridiculous in the context of this film. It's not a downright terrible movie. You could probably watch this with your friends and get a couple of laughs out of it. Just don't think of it as some sort of artistic painting of the black culture.

Larry Peebles ...but I love this movie. For what it's worth, I am a white gay male of well-above-average intelligence....but I laugh my ass off every time I see this movie. As completely mindless, silly, joyful entertainment, I rank it up there with other classics (in my mind) like "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Half Baked," and the "Scary Movie" offerings. Lighten up, light up, and enjoy! (For God's sake, at least there's plenty of eye candy.) My favorite moments: (1) Any scene with Kevin Hart, who is friggin' gorgeous; (2) Mo'Nique; there ain't never 'nuff 'Nique---beauty, brains, humor---man, she's the answer; (3) "I'm a playah!" (4) Method Man is adorable (regardless of what my friends say), and last, but far from least....Snoop! If Snoop's in it, I love it!
