Did you people see the same film I saw?

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Six years after the events of Night of the Demons, all of the bodies at Hull House have been recovered except Angela. Urban legend suggests that she went body and soul directly to Hell. But the real truth? Upon getting a Halloween card with her signature last year, her parents committed suicide. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Night of the Demons 2, one of the many sequels that my wife loves more than the original. Meet Melissa, who everyone calls Mouse. She's Angela's sister, who is now attending St. Rita's Academy, a school for troubled teens. The school bully, Shirley, gives her a hard time while Sister Gloria, the head nun, tries to look out for her.Shirley isn't allowed to attend the school dance after the nuns catch her fooling around with Kurt, so she decides to have her own Halloween party at Hull House, complete with a demonic ritual and help from the school nerd, her boyfriend, a guy named Z-Boy, Johnny, Johnny's girl Bibi and Terri (Christine Taylor, years before she was in The Brady Bunch Movie).Of course, all Hell breaks loose. What you might not expect is that the demonic Angela rises and rapes Z-Boy in the attic in an inversion of horror movie tropes. And a tube of lipstick possesses Shirley, which leads to the girls being possessed and murdered by Angela, who wants to sacrifice her sister Mouse to the Devil. The nerd, Perry, uses his demonology skills and the help of Father Bob and Sister Gloria to try to rescue the teens. Bibi, Johnny and Sister Gloria survive, killing all of the demons except Angela, who tries to cut the nun's head off. A combination of a sword strike, a supersoaker filled with holy water and light coming through a cross shape finally kills Angela. But oh no! The evil lipstick survives!Brian Trenchard Smith (Turkey Shoot, Leprechaun 4: In Space) puts together a quick moving fun piece of cinema junk food here. It's not anything that will stay with you for long, but it'll certainly keep you laughing and somewhat entertained while it's in your DVD player or streaming on your media player.

Angela returns, and this time, she has a sister, Mouse, who is taken by her bullying Catholic school classmates to a party at Angela's favourite haunt. It's not long before everybody's being turned into demons and only a nun, who wields her ruler like a mighty sword of steel, can save the day.....The first movie was a bit of exploitative fun, but what made it that more interesting was the fact that the film was original, and featured a wonderful villain in Angela. As with all sequels, especially horror, they have tried to recreate the magic of the first one. But here, they have basically remade the original, but added a sibling to the villain. And it's pretty lazy of the makers for doing this.So for the first two acts, we have the boys flirting with the girls and vice versa, and there is nudity aplenty for the boys (in the film) to drool over. So far, so bland. But it's also a negative for the film also, as we get to know the characters, and mouse aside, all the characters are of the dislikable kind, so when it comes to the third act carnage, you couldn't care less about them. The effects are good though, and there are a few tense moments, but it's a lazy sequel.Even the boring remake is better.

Night Of The Demons 2 never knows what the hell it wants to be. Camp? Horror comedy? The tone wavers from something out of the broadest cartoon, to actually ratcheting up decent horror thrills, but never finds its footing. The last act ups the silliness with holy water grenades, nun action and never knows when to quit - it just gets sillier by the second and the film suffers all the more from it. What precedes the last act never reaches the original, but it's a worthy follow up. The production design, cinematography and makeup fx are cheaper than the first entry, but this quick 3 week shoot is competent enough to be worth a watch. The barely one dimensional characters add to the hokey fun and the silliness and low death count keep this from being remotely memorable.

The original is one of my favorite horror movies. It's the epitome of a party movie, and incredibly entertaining. This is nowhere near as good as Night of Demons, but considering it went straight to video it's actually decent entertainment, if you kick your brain to the curb. Like the original, its void of character development and it relies on cheesy entertainment, which it does quite well. The gore is very creative in this one. A jaw is ripped off, someone gets beheaded, and my personal highlight, the weird snake like creature, which strangely happens as a result of possessed lipstick (!) The biblical aspect plays a big part in this movie as well. Jennifer Rhodes is a blast as Sister Gloria. She's a bit of a stickler in the first half, with her overly strict ways, but that turns into kick-ass mode in the second half. Her character is all over the place, and it actually serves the film extremely well. She was a lot of fun. Amelia Kinkade reprises her role of Angela from the first movie. She's older, and not quite as hot. She's still a hoot, though. Cristi Harris makes for a solid heroine, whilst Ben Stiller's wife, Christine Taylor shows up and looks hot. You won't catch me complaining. We have also entered into the realm of the bizarre here. We get balloons, super-soaker's, a nun with martial art skills. It's all very OTT, but quite fun if you let yourself get sucked into it. I would watch this back to back with the original on Halloween night. You'll find your Halloween well spent. If you don't have a party to go to of your own, kick back with Angela!6.3/10
