Newsies Audience Reviews

SteinMo What a freaking movie. So many twists and turns. Absolutely intense from start to finish.
Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
Sabah Hensley This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Abegail Noëlle While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
Hitchcoc I really like this musical. It was pretty much ignored when it came out. With Disney at the helm, it had a reasonable audience. It is the story of newsboys during hard times, trying to make a few bucks peddling their papers, when the bosses, like Joseph Pulitzer, couldn't care less about them and their lives. Not only are they not respected, the bosses begin to raise the prices on the papers (papes) they sell, giving them much less profit. They live on a delicate balance because they have to sell every paper or they are stuck for the cost of the unsold ones. This leads talk of unionizing. Unionizing at this time in America was seen as communism and this led to some head bashing. There are some great songs in this film, and some outstanding choreography. One current development that has boosted this movie is the fact that there is now a Broadway production that has had tremendous popularity. People who never saw this film are now watching it.
elizalded Twirls, Leaps, and Tap Dancing Boys? Such a miraculous sight can be watched in the movie Newsies (directed by Kenny Ortega) released by Disney in 1992. The movie centers in 1899 New York, when kids (the Newsies) would sell newspapers to make a living. The story follows Jack Kelly (Christian Bale), and his closest comrade, David Jacobs (David Moscow), who lead the Newsies in a strike against Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) who had raised the cost of newspapers. Throughout the movie, scenes filled with amazing choreography and catchy songs get stuck in you head all day. Although this musical has been entertaining, it also contains some historical accuracy. In the movie, Jack Kelly plays the leader of the Newsies. In reality, the leader of the Newsies was named Kid Blink because the boy would wear an eye-patch. This character is seen sporadically thought the movie, maintaining the real life person of Kid Blink involved in the strike. Theatre is always looking for drama to add, and displaying Pulitzer as the "mean, selfish and prideful" man conveyed the audience to be interested in the overall plot of Newsies. In real life, Pulitzer started off as this character, but later sided with unions during many strikes, and compromised with the Newsies. Overall, this movie was highly entertaining and hilarious to watch. The actors with all the dancing and singing gave us the intricate show of the Newsies.
gregorc-70520 Newsies did not disappoint! The film was directed by Kenny Ortega in 1992 and is a pivotal part of every journalism and American history class. It shows the news boys' strike of 1899 in a fun way that makes you want to stand up and start singing with the boys. With a run time of more than two hours and a PG rating, it's a great movie for family movie night. The musical did a good job showing life in late 19th century America, however, it had some glaring historical inaccuracies. To avoid spoiling the end, let's just say the film depicts a happier ending than the real life scenario. Additionally, Newsies shows primarily male characters in the news strike while females were very prevalent in real life. Music from the movie was up beat and accompanied with some incredible dancing. One of my favorite songs was King of New York. The cast, which includes David Moscow, Luke Edwards, and Christian Bale, make the Disney musical come to life on the big screen. Overall, Newsies is a film I would pay to watch time after time. I give it a 9/10 and with historically accurate information it would undoubtedly be a 10/10.
kellenk-61694 1992 Musical is a Must SeeA 1992 musical starring young, fiery boys ready to take on the world is here to stay. Newsies, a Disney movie directed by Kenny Ortega, has been out for more than 20 years and is still watched by many. The movie surrounds the real story of young boys in New York who sell newspaper for a living. It touches on the harsh reality of the lives of boys at this time. The movie goes on to show the progress of these boy's strike against the newspaper companies. The movie very closely follows the historical events of the time, which makes it more informative, but also interesting to watch. Newsies amazing success is due in part to the cast. Characters such as Jack Kelly, played by Christian Bale, and David, played by David Moscow, made the show thrilling and lovable. Actor Robert Duvall, who played Pulitzer, seemed to lack character and passion. Although Duvall's character dragged, the overall effect was amazing. Another strong point through the musical was the dancing and singing. The choreography was spectacular and added a deeper level to the movie. In my opinion on Newsies is that is is a lovable, family friendly movie that is a must see for all. I would give this movie 4 ½ stars out of 5 and recommend that you go see it as soon as you can.
