Doctor Skellington If you enjoy staring at two pretty nobodies ad-libbing about whether or not they might want to pork one day whilst travelling across Mexico, with poor CGI monsters you only ever get to see occasionally hinted at in uber dark and mushy night scenes to hide the effects from criticism, then this movie is for you, if however you were hoping for action, adventure and some actual monsters in your monster movie, then no.Blair Witch with slightly better production values and just as much pay off for your time.

sol- Set in a future in which half of Mexico has been "infected" by giant aliens, two Americans try to cross the border and return to the United States in this alien invasion film with a difference. In an unusual move, the title creatures hardly ever appear on screen, something that makes their fleeting appearances late in the piece more mysterious and enchanting. That said, the lack of monsters in the first half of the movie does not quite sit right as it forces us to instead concentrate on the hardly remarkable main characters. Apparently much of the dialogue was improvised and it shows with nothing but awkward conversations between the pair on subjects as varied as dolphins and the weather. The romantic tension between them is also a little too routine to click with their eventual bonding blatantly obvious from the start. The film does have several solid moments though as the characters come across "infected" trees that bring to mind the forests of 'eXistenZ' and some of the monster action near the end is also quite compelling thanks to excellent special effects. The vast majority of the film though just revolves around the protagonists conversing with each other, which is only as engaging as it sounds. It is at least refreshing though to come across a dire dystopia movie where there is not a sense of doom and gloom overhanging every scene, plus the ending is certainly memorable.

despoticfacts My last two watched movies were really disappointing and I started blaming my self for choices, but this great movie compensated me, a simple brilliant touching movie with a fantastic music and great ending, I repeat it is a simple movie saying a lot of things and it is not an action movie, do not fall into the trap and wait for action cause you will not find it and then you will not love it, if you liked cloverfield, wild, into the wild and the road, certainly you will love monsters, prepare your self for a drama, adventure movie and watch cause it worth

Dandy_Desmond Yes I give it a 9. I think Monsters is a wonderful, melancholy film. I do agree the title is misleading and can generate some hate as people will feel duped and expect an action film of sorts. I would describe this as a 'feel piece' - my girlfriend finished watching it, then looked at me in puzzlement commenting nothing happened in it. She's right too. Its not a story that goes from A to B as such, its not just about Monsters wrecking stuff or two strangers thrown together into a dangerous situation and falling in love. It creates a world and you are part of that world for an hour and a half. It creates a mood, an atmosphere. A strong element of this is down to the music, which is excellent throughout. The actors do a fine job of creating their characters and their chemistry feels genuine. I understand they are a real life couple but that doesn't always come across. I would have said that some of the success of the film was down to luck as it was shot on the fly. However there is no mistaking the genius of the ending. The two main characters are in an abandoned Gas Station, there is a storm coming and you catch a glimpse of a monster approaching. This will be as a viewer the first time a monster is seen clearly and the music as ominous, something bad is going to happen. Slowly the mood changes, the music evolves into that of wonder as another monster approaches and it looks like they mate or something (thankfully nothing weird) and the two main characters watch in awe at these beautiful creatures as they do their 'thang' and then move along in peace. There is then a silence as the two characters take in what they just saw. Its brilliant and turns the film on its head completely. I understand why people may hate this, but for some like myself, its a really great experience.
