The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.

Lets get the criticism out of the way first. Imagine your watching a film with your annoying kid brother and every time someone spoke your annoying kid brother paused the film and you had to wait a minute to find out what the other person said until play was pressed and the film resumed. Well Joe Black is a bit like this. It is 3 hours long and at least an hour is taken up with PAUSES. Secondly the character death who has been around since the big bang has been as observant of humankind as an ostrich with its head in the sand. You would think he knew everything....WRONG. His EUREKA moment is the discovery of peanut butter which goes to show that Death is really an American at heart. Did I mention the longful looks?...No....well imagine you had a annoying kid brother who pressed pause when your watching a film every time people looked at each other....you know where I am going.....For such a great cast and what could have been a much better story and for wasting most of the 3hrs on freeze frame cinema I will give a 4.....RIP Anthony Hopkins

The bitching hipster haters who love to castigate this movie seem to forget what fantasy means. This movie is a fantasy. It works. Brad Pitt is amazing. The hating on him in this movie over the last 20 years is totally disgusting.

The beauty of truly creative story telling is discovered as it enters your mind - hours, days and years after we experience the art. The power of love is a subject that limits the reach of many films. Meet Joe Black offers the well crafted cover of business, power and the supernatural. The story line seems rather simple until the twist comes and it gets a little challenging for a lot of us to handle. The good news is that while we are trying to come to grips with the surface story, the creators sneak in a second slow moving tale of the limitless power of true love. They address a father's love, a daughter's love, the love between a man and a woman and most importantly the film makers get into superficial convenient love. Power over others can cause us to be selfish. This story highlights the brightest version of power and love. We are able to do what is best for another even when that is not aligned with our own desires. Reaching this level takes care and practice. Real love is greater than our needs. Meet Joe Black does a wonderful job of sneaking this life lesson in on us.

Outlined plot is Anthony Hopkins getting distracted by the voice of death, and realises more meets the eye when he comes across Brad Pitt as an animated corpse possessed by Death, then Pitt is smitten with the Daughter which causes problems.I don't mean to be rude but how on earth did this movie get the go ahead to be created for production? What is the point to it despite making people bored to death (pardon the pun). Anthony Hopkins is absolutely wasted in this movie and such an incredible actor that doesn't deserve to be in this mess. Jake Weber from American Gothic did do a good performance but even he can't save the movie, because the whole movie dialogue and weak slow plot is terrible. I read some reviews saying "oh don't get me wrong, Brad Pitt is attractive" for speaking the truth on how bad the film is, well I never found Brad Pitt attractive but I do appreciate interview with the Vampire, a river runs through it, Seven, and Kalifornia that illustrates good performances (even if he can't get rid of his lisp in each movie, watch out for the word "finish" and you will hear it), Meet Joe Black is a drivel mess. There is nothing meaningful in the movie or heartfelt about it, accept necrophilia between Brad and the CEO's Daughter (last movie like that was Weekend at Bernies but it sucks and we forgave it for being a comedy, this is a serious drama for goodness sake!) All you see is Pitt that turned into a boring zombie without bruises, isn't like the charming so and so at the coffee shop, that gorges on peanut butter that isn't old as time, stuffs his face like an infant, and mimics a weird Jamaican accent who might become a murder suspect to our Anthony and if not careful. I am not one of those gullible females fortunately, that is what makes judgement easy for me on this lame film. The only thing good is the photography and lighting but when it boils down to it, the movie is dead, just like the gazes and stares the actors give to each other in this nonsense. Forget it.
