Be it Woody Allen or Rob Schneider, a comedy about an average Shmoe who tries his hand at becoming a top-notch gigolo was never going to be the subtlest of propositions to the viewer. To actor-writer-director John Turturro's credit, he actually pulls that part off quite well: His innocuous and laconic Fioravente is so far off the radar of female sex fiends such as Sharon Stone (yeah, she's still got it -- not bad for a 55 years old mum of three) that he just about manages to come off as mysteriously attractive. Allen himself is also pretty funny as Murray the pater familias of a black patchwork family, turned part-time mack.Enters former pop nymphette slash jailbait Vanessa Paradis as Avidal, an ultraorthodox Jewish widow from Williamsburg. Get this, she works as the nit (headlice) remover for Allen's children, and as such Allen hooks her up with the fella he's pimping. Better not think too long about that one. Anyways, they naturally fall in love (I mean Avidal and Fioravente, not Avidal and Murray) and we get the heaviest dose of unmitigated Shtetl romance ever since the Fiddler On The Roof, or possibly even Yentl. But Avidal ultimately decides on a neighbourhood watchman from her neighbourhood who confides that he has watched her ever since he was a boy. Murray on the other hand is kidnapped (or, in his case, old-kacker-napped) and put before a orthodox Jewish tribunal. All this was probably envisioned to be light-hearted cross-cultural entertainment, but to me it was a Dantean glimpse down into the pits of hell.

Woody Allen style of story telling hits on themes of the frailties o the human condition and in Fading Gigolo hits some hot spots. Written by John Turturro, this one gives Woody Allen star billing. The need for physical and emotional contact is ageless. The role of risk in our daily is present but diminishes as we get older and less of risk takers. The frame of the story lies in Murray's (Woody Allen) world who after his bookstore fails, he discovers he is good in pin pointing the distress of women around him. What they need is physical affection and after one confesses the desire of a menege a trois, Murray turns to his helpful bookstore clerk Floaante (John Turturro). In the course of the arrange "treatment", Murray becomes a defacto pimp where they venture into setting up woman who is part of a conservative Jewish sect. Funny, witty, and sexy, this film shares that you can find love in all the wrong places.

The worlds oldest profession is never a dull subject and such is the case in fading gigalo. Very often when I go to talk with a friend or associate about this film I get shot down with "I don't like Woody Allen and "his" movies" and I get that(you don't like dry comedy that doesn't overwhelm but what needs to be understood is that this film is merely costarring Woody Allen as an enjoyable, humorously scheming accidental pimp in this film with John Turtorro handling the writing and direction excellent costars by the eternally seductive Sharon Stone and Sultry Sofia Vergara made this one interesting and fun for me especially Liev Schrieber as an overprotective neighborhood watch that gives sentimental and comedic value to the already comedic duo Of Turtorro and Allen.

Actor-Director John Turturro's "Fading Gigolo" was fading my attention span sporadically throughout the movie. Turturro stars as Fioravante, a middle-aged New Yorkan who decides to be a pre-geriatric Don Juan; yes, a male prostitute. The problem is that Turturro prostituted his viewers with an enticing premise, but does not deliver the creative juice in this one with neither his direction, script, and performance in the movie. Woody Allen did pimp up the acting volume with his comical supporting performance as Murray, Fioravante's conniving pimp manager. "Fading Gigolo" is just a so-so gigolo movie, and believe the words I am saying... Sorry David Lee Roth! *** Average
