Escape to Athena Audience Reviews

Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Isbel A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Leofwine_draca This rather feeble wartime thriller attempts to mix together fairly disparate elements: the liberation of a Nazi prisoner of war camp; the smuggling of fine Greek antiques; the development of a new Nazi ultra-weapon and an Allied invasion. It sounds all over the place and it is: the film adopts a jokey, lighthearted tone in spite of the subject matter that reminded me of KELLY'S HEROES – although this is far less successful. When the film's most memorable scene sees Stefanie Powers performing a striptease to a bunch of sweaty Nazis you know you're in trouble. Roger Moore, miscast as the world's most unconvincing German, doesn't help either and his supposed romance scenes with Powers felt sleazy rather than sweet. There's a past-his-prime David Niven looking desperately like he wishes he was elsewhere and Elliott Gould overacting as the token humourist. Richard Roundtree's presence is never quite explained and as for the pathetic Sonny Bono, the less said the better. The only one who comes out of this with any credit is Telly Savalas as the tough resistance leader; I loved his Greek dancing at the climax. On the plus side, the film's structured fairly well, with a series of increasingly fraught missions occupying much of the running time. It does take a while to get going, though. There's a claustrophobic motorbike chase about halfway through that marks a definite highlight, featuring some exceptional photography as the machines ride down narrow streets and alleyways. George Pan Cosmatos handles the proceedings with a certain efficiency to stop this from becoming a total dud, but it's still a disappointment.
LeaBlacks_Balls It's always weird for me to see an actor who played James Bond in another movie from that period of their 007 career. This would have to be the weirdest so far.Roger Moore plays an antique collecting SS Officer stationed in Greece during WWII who runs a prison camp. In this camp, which more or less resembles a resort, are David Niven (also a former James Bond,) Richard Roundtree (Shaft!,) and Sonny Bono (the ex-Mr. Cher.) In a 'Hogan's Heroes' type set-up they annoy Roger Moore and his evil SS colleague (played by Anthony Valentine) by always trying to escape. When they are caught, instead of being put to death they are given a slap on the wrist. You see, it turns out that Roger Moore isn't a bad Nazi, he's just an opportunist, which we learn when two American art dealers, played by Elliot Gould and Stefanie Powers, arrive. He and the three prisoners and these two Americans plan on stealing some treasure hidden in a local monastery. When the Germans lose the war, they'll make millions.Meanwhile, Telly Savalas (a former Bond villain) plays a Greek resistance fighter who is holed up in a local brothel run by the vampy Claudia Cardinale. He plans on liberating the Nazi prison camp and destroying a German submarine. After an overlong and dull second act, it turns out that the Nazi's have turned the local monastery into a secret launch pad for a deadly nuclear bomb. Telly leads Mr. Cher, Shaft, and Elliot Gould up the cliffs to the monastery while Moore, Niven and Stefanie Powers get to work on destroying the German submarine. If only any of it were exciting. This movie is only good for seeing such a big, interesting cast in such a big disaster of a WWII adventure. The most egregious offender is Elliot Gould, whose character seems like he's right out of the 70's, not the 40's. In fact, this whole film seems to take place in some alternate reality where WWII continued on into the late 1970's.
deanlamb This is one of the worst '70s "war" movies i have ever seen in my life and possibly the worst ensemble of bad performances in one movie. Elliot Gould narrowly snatches the title of worst actor from Roger Moore but to be honest every actor in this movie is in with a good shout! George P. Cosmatos is an horrendous hack of director who later went on to follow up the rather quite good "First Blood" with one of the worst sequels in movie history "Rambo: First Blood Part II". The screenplay is bloated and uneventful with so much padding just to fill a 2 hour running time which was almost essential for these type of films in the day. If your undecided as to whether to watch this movie for the first time let me decide for you? DON'T WATCH IT!!!!!!!!
jasraluke I watched the movie a few years after it was released. Then I watched it on TV a few times and I enjoyed it every time. It is true that for a war film it looks sometimes unrealistic (as someone has already said) like "a holiday brochure" (really nice pictures). It is however an adventure film, with elements of comedy, so it is NOT meant to be realistic. The only realistic scenes are the ones from the town. I liked the actors - especially Roger Moore and Telly Savalas. They are very contrasting characters. I hope it will not be a spoiler to say that Roger plays a nice man that happens to be on the wrong side and Telly plays a cynical, ruthless (at least looking like that) man being on the right side. I liked some dialogues as well.
