Tracy Flick is running unopposed for this year’s high school student election. But Jim McAllister has a different plan. Partly to establish a more democratic election, and partly to satisfy some deep personal anger toward Tracy, Jim talks football player Paul Metzler to run for president as well.

Election Audience Reviews

Cubussoli Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
GazerRise Fantastic!
Solidrariol Am I Missing Something?
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
grantss The high school Class President election is approaching and it looks like Tracy Flick is going to win, unopposed. However, teacher Jim McAllister has other plans. He convinces jock Paul Metzler to run, sparking off an interesting chain of events.Brilliant movie from writer-director Alexander Payne. Darkly funny, with a cynical, subversive streak to it. This subversiveness extends beyond the comedy as the movie captures high school as a microcosm for the world we live in, especially the world of politics. Here Payne is particularly brilliant and brutal, showing us the kind of people who thrive in politics, and what happens to those that get in their way.
novagirl11 If you're craving something like this from 1999, watch American Beauty instead! If you want to see young Reese Witherspoon, go for Legally Blonde which is only 2 years later! Election had it's comical moments but mainly laughing at how bad it is. Sadly, this was not what I expected.
gulsumozturk A high school teacher who was always talking about morals and ethics should not have ended being such a failure. The movie was pointless and there is no moral at the end. In addition, I could not find any point to laugh at, either, so it should not be categorized under comedy genre.
jcbinok I always liked Election back when it first came out, but haven't seen it in years. After watching on DVD last night and again a little bit today with the director's commentary turned on, I like it better than ever. Simple and realistic...and sinister. The director keeps viewers off-balance with his use of superimposed images ("Fill me up, Mr. M."), screen-wipes, real Mid-West locations and real students as extras, etc. And the main actors do a great job representing their unique personality-types: ambitious go-getter, laid back dude, love- smitten teen, comfortably happy teacher with passions that sometimes bubble over.I also like that after the main action of the story is complete, the movie goes on a little longer. Sometimes those appendages can be pointless, but in this case it's reassuring to see Mr. McCallister land on his feet elsewhere and see, too, that his passions are still bubbling.
