Am I Missing Something?

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

This is, like many of the previous comments point out, a worthless film, a waste of space. It's shot like cheap home video (not like an expensive ditto, like for example Cloverfield). In the intro, the supposedly dead "Black Dahlia" actually flinches when red liquid ("blood") squirts on her face, and everything that follows actually looks like cheap erotica (without actually showing more nudity than a few uncalled for bare breasts): There is no cinematographic feel at all; no love for the medium or genre like many other low budget movies possess. The "story" consists of the repetitive casting of new victims for the leather-masked, never explained butcher and the likewise unintelligible porn-star/anti-heroine egging him on.This film shows no story, drama, psychology, gore, humor or anything. Even writing this comment is showing it too much attention - don't waste your time and money on it!

I mean no offense at all to smokskren, who wrote the negative review about this movie, but I have to disagree. I've always had a little obsession with cold cases (I'm a police officer in Colorado), and while this movie is lacking what other, high-budget films can bring to the table, I enjoyed it thoroughly. 'Black Dahlia' as the victim is popularly called (Elizabeth Short), killed on January 15th, 1947, most likely was a poor young woman who left this world far too early. I won't go into the details, since that won't matter to anyone who isn't truly interested in this case, but this movie produced an emotional reaction within me I never expected a movie could. Sure, this was a low-budget film, with hardly any special effects (all of the murders are quite ambiguously played out), and unique (yet awkward) cinematography. I've seen movies that have made a lot more sense to me than this one. Really, I suppose I want to ask anyone who thinks they might want to watch this film to do their best to understand as much as we know about the death of Elizabeth Short. While 90% of the characters are quite silly, the music is corny at times (thought provoking at others), the random clips of seemingly unrelated material to the case (military woman marching and saluting?!), for anyone who is truly interested in the sickening and completely wrong manner of death of a young woman (who might've had problems, but was no worse truly than you or I), this movie will truly strike you deep inside. Sorry smokskren, but I must give this movie a high ranking. Thank you to all the people who made this disgusting movie. Even in such a disgusting and horrifying manner, you have kept the story of Elizabeth Short alive in this modern era. Perhaps her murder will become as famous as those of Jack the Ripper. I certainly hope so, for if other's become as upset and emotionally impacted as I was with this movie, perhaps we can avoid a repeat of this tragedy.

Black Dahlia (2006) BOMB (out of 4) Ulli Lommel version of the legendary murder takes place in present day L.A. where three psychopaths are doing copycat murders and might have a link to the 1947 case. I'm not sure what in the hell happened to Lommel but after creating the somewhat spooky The Boogeyman he has turned out nothing but pure crap including a sequel to that film plus other recent "real life" films like Green River Killer, BTK Killer and Zodiac Killer. I was expecting a piece of junk when I received the screener and that's exactly what I got. The entire film features the exact same stuff happening over and over. An actress goes for an audition, runs into the killers, gets slaughtered and the next day police talk about it. Even at 82-minutes this thing seemed to go on forever. Dreadful in every way imaginable so go see the DePalma flick instead.

I've seen bad movies, most of them are bad in a funny way. This movie is just bad, really bad. My wife bought what she thought was the theatrical release, turns out they had messed up the boxes or something. We just watched it so we haven't had time to take it back yet, but it won't stay on the shelf for long. (For a funny bad movie watch Legend of Rollerblade 7.)Since IMDb won't let me submit a rating without writing a few more lines than this POS deserves, I'll elaborate. The scenes are repetitive to the point where fast-forwarding through all but ~10 minutes of the movie is enough not to miss anything. Cheap gore is overused, and despite it all no one on set seems to understand what a joke their movie is. Pretentious filler by wannabe artists.
