Bio-Dome Audience Reviews

Breakinger A Brilliant Conflict
KnotStronger This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
Brenda The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Skyler Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
ironhorse_iv I used to like movies like this, as a kid, due to the idea of living life in a control ecosystem. However, after rewatching it. It hasn't aged well since then. According to some sources, 1996's 'Bio-Dome' directed by Jason Bloom, was supposed to be a serious character study movie about scientists trying to survival in a Plato's Allegory of the Cave bio-dome environment, while also trying to keep their sanity together. Something similar to 2013's 'Under the Dome' TV Series. Instead, the executives at Motion Picture Corporation of America decided for the film to make money, it had to become a comedy. In short, they wanted to make another low brow hit, similar to their earlier films, 1994's 'Dumb & Dumber'. Because of this, the plot was change to revolve around two clumsy, dim-witted slackers, Bud "Squirrel" Macintosh (Pauly Shore) and Doyle "Stubs" Johnson (Stephen Baldwin) getting trap for a whole year in a closed ecological structure with a bunch of scientists, when they mistake it for a shopping mall. Without spoiling the movie, too much, while the whole environmentalism message, still somewhat existed in this film; it was water down by the extreme insufferable behavior of the two leads, even after they supposedly better themselves. We're meant to see Bud and Doyle as the good guys, but I can't help myself, cheering against them and going with the villain, Dr. Noah Faulkner (William Atherton). His actions to get rid of them, kinda does make sense to me. These two, are really awful. Don't get me wrong, Bud & Doyle do have a morality tale character arch, but they spend way too much of the movie, being annoying, and not funny. The lame totally radical cheesy dialogue mixed with the cringe-worth sexual innuendo, and juvenile toilet humor from some of the worst. Not only do, they act like ridiculously irresponsible children, for most of the movie; they are very disrespectful towards their sexy girlfriends, Monique (Joey Lauren Adams) and Jen (Teresa Hill) by willing to cheat on them. Plus, their unprovoked groping/attempted rape of the female scientists, Dr. Petra von Kant (Kylie Minogue) & Mimi Simkins (Dara Tomanovich) in their sleep is really disturbing. While, I like all the actresses that were in this film. I just don't understand, how, any of these women characters can find them, attractive after that!? There were no good reason, for the female scientists to egg the male-scientists, to keep them around. Honestly, the scientists should had been kicked the duo, out of the titular Bio-Dome as they break in, and the movie would be over in 15 minutes. They weren't no reason, why scientists couldn't reset the timer, a few minutes later, while the police arrested them, as there isn't much longtime effects, happening. Plus, it would prevent them, from practically destroy the Bio-Dome that the scientists put all that hard work into developing, later in the film. Not only that, but it doesn't make sense, why the scientists would continue the project after Bud & Doyle ruined it. The yearlong scientific record is still pretty tainted, no matter, how much, they clean the Bio-Dome. Also, there is the fact that there is an open door, in what's supposed to be a self-contained ecology is a big problem. So why is the scientists continuing to work on the Bio-Dome!? I guess, it's because they need to cover up the mess from the investors!? Isn't that 'fraud'? Wouldn't the investors find out, anyways, when the scientific record come out and an investigation of the bomb-plot come out!? Anyways, that wasn't the only thing, wrong with this movie. The movie is extremely dated. Everything looks like a bad 1990s commercial. The 1990s MTV quick-style editing with everything on screen, being tossed into your face as if it's trying to be a 3D movie was awful. You can't really see, what it is, before the object or text, disappears, a second later. Even the effects were bad; the strobing lights are pretty blinding. Plus, it will can potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. The cinematic credits looks like a ransom letter. Also, what was the deal with the random sound effects!? Why is there, a baby cry in the film!? This movie has nothing, to do with infants! Also, what was the deal with the one random flash back!? Also, what was the deal, of hiring ex- brain wash bank robber/terrorist turn actress for a small bit part!? Was Doyle's mom (Patricia Hearst) supposed to have, a bigger role!? Another awful thing about this movie is the music choice. The alternative rock mixed with punk song from the bands, 'Fourth Grade Nothing', 'Dance Hall Crashers', & "Wax" were headache to listen to. Also, I know, a lot of people like the band, 'Tenacious D', but I'm not a huge fan of their comedy music. I find them, very unfunny. I found their cameo presence in the movie to be brainless and pointless. The same goes with the random cameos of Rose McGowan, Roger Clinton and others. They didn't add much to the story, nor were they funny. Overall: This was the film that finally derailed both Pauly Shore's and Stephen Baldwin's short careers. Thank goodness. I just can't comprehend how stupid, this movie was. Nor could I advise, watching it, even today. It's a movie that is better left forgotten in the past.
Dave from Ottawa Amazingly, this movie was given a theatrical release, rather than being disposed of as hazardous waste. Even more amazing is the fact that it actually has defenders. There are those who believe that this movie is harmless fun, when in fact you would have to be one of the hysterically laughing stoners from Reefer Madness to find it at all entertaining. A failed internet stunt is less painful than sitting through this mess, and no more likely to leave you with brain damage.Bud and Doyle are our two everyman heroes, assuming every guy is a nitwit with no job and Joey Lauren Adams for a girlfriend. And like the rest of us nitwits, Bud and Doyle just want to party while the Earth goes to hell on a fast train. There is a potential cautionary tale about environmental awareness in there somewhere, but it gets lost amidst our duo's goofy but unfunny antics. Bud and Doyle make the cast of Jackass look like Laurel and Hardy by comparison. After a few misunderstandings and much time-wasting non-hilarity, our duo find themselves locked in a sealed environment with five scientists who are studying environmental sustainability. Two of the scientists are played by popstar Kylie Minogue and former model Dara Tomanovich, and if I ever find out which graduate school they attended, I may go back to school. But our boys just want to have dumb fun and proceed to trash the place. Again, the idea that this whole movie might actually be a social allegory about man partying over Mother Nature's deathbed may occur to those viewers who are still aware of their surroundings, but it quickly gets lost thanks to several long scenes involving Pauly Shore not being funny. This whole business goes on for ninety fairly painful minutes. You can usually tell whether a movie succeeded as entertainment by watching the audience as it leaves the theatre. If a movie is a think piece, everybody looks thoughtful. Patrons of comedies tend to leave in an upbeat mood. The audience for Bio Dome looked lobotomized. The best part of the movie was that it did not end with a title card that read Pauly Shore Returns In...
Colin Mann For those of you growing up in the late 80's / early 90's, you will know that MTV used to show music videos as opposed to naff reality TV shows. You are probably also familiar with the 'star' of Bio-Dome, Pauly Shore. Shore was an MTV VJ during this time and even had his own show such was his popularity, especially in the USA. He became globally known through his character Stoney Brown in the movie California Man (1992) and his career grew from strength to strength. Personally, I was not a fan of Pauly Shore, although I must be fair to him, he is only the 3rd worse Shore on MTV, (#2 Jersey, #1 Geordie). In 1996 he decided that a successful career was not for him and so set about destroying it by making Bio-Dome. Plotwise it involves 2 dropout stoner dudes who accidentally get trapped in a Bio-Dome which is subsequently sealed for 1 year as part of an experiment into sustaining a mini Ecosystem with 'hilarious' consequences. It's easy to compare this movie to Bill and Ted's Excellent adventures. Like Bill and Ted, they are similar ages, both Californian surfer types, dropouts and under achievers. There is, however, one slight difference. Bill and Ted, are characters you grow to care about, even like and you really want them to succeed by the end of the movie. Bud and Doyle, on the other hand, you want to punch in the face repeatedly (And I don't condone violence, but even the Dalai Lama would need anger management after watching these two). Bud (Shore) and Doyle (Stephen Baldwin) really fail to connect with the audience or unfortunately a large mallet.I'm very high brow and enjoy a good fart gag as much as the next professor. But when it's constantly forced down your throat, (metaphorically), over and over again for 90 minutes it really starts to grate. But it did not need to be like that. The opening few minutes has good slapstick, physical comedy and decent gags mixed with toilet humour. The problem is that this formula is then rinsed and repeated, with nothing new to offer for the entire movie. There are a lot of famous names in this film. Kylie Minogue, for example, but neither her nor her bottom could save this movie. She is quoted as saying Bio-Dome is the only film which she regrets. Someone may have to remind her she was also in Street Fighter (1994). There is also a cameo from Jack Black and Kyle Glass who appear as their band Tenacious D, (overall the soundtrack is very good and includes Reverend Horton Heat, Faith No More and The Ramones). Penn and Teller also make a background appearance at the very end, (although they look like they have wandered onto set by accident and desperately want to find their way out again!).I must, however, make a confession. I actually quite liked it. The truth is I did laugh in places, it was so stupid that I did not have to think for 90 minutes and because of that I could wind down, relax and almost, (gulp) enjoy it.So I will conclude with this, Bio-Dome is not a good film in fact it's mind-numbing rubbish. However, one Sunday morning, post 10 pints, several shots and a very large greasy kebab, one of the movie channels will be showing a film dedicated to the memory of the career of Pauly Shore. It'll be Bio-Dome and you will not change the channel, you will secretly enjoy it and forget how crap you feel this morning, (and that embarrassing incident with the traffic cone and that squirrel).Bio-Dome has many flaws but it's one redeeming feature? It's a bloody good hangover film.
jake-law123 There's no way to enjoy this film, unless you're brain dead and can't tell it different from anything else or if you were high, even then it probably wouldn't work. This film is anti comedy, so bad and so unfunny it begs the question how it was made, and somewhat a success.Pauley Shore and Stephen Baldwin plays two dimwit best friends who accidentally become test subjects of a Bio Dome project to sustain life for a year. Being forced to stay in the Bio Dome with the other scientists, their goofy antics ultimately ruin everything, including what comedy stands for.A lot of the comedy comes from Pauley and Stephen making goofy faces and noises. There's barely any attempt at a joke here. The best part about the movie is the Tenacious D cameo, that's pretty much it. The rest of the film is just these two dunderheads acting like idiots the whole time. And no, it's not entertainingly bad, because the film is also boring. It's only an hour an a half but it felt like an eternity because the whole film is basically filler, they're just goofing around all day. The point is that they're likablely stupid, but instead they're so painfully stupid I wanted to kill myself. I was so disappointed in the end when it looked like they died but then they didn't. If they had died that would have made up for the rest of the film, but instead they move on, though the film ends after that so oh well.I do not recommend this film to anybody. If you're curious, trust me, it's not worth it. The biggest waste of time I've ever had the displeasure of wasting. The 2nd worst comedy of all time, (the 1st being Meet the Spartans).
