Better Late Then Never

I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Take a truly unlikable aging man, add a seemingly happy go lucky neurotic woman, then toss in ultimately a little girl who turns out to be the Grouch's daughter, and you end up with Punky Brewster meets Annie Hall. Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton play extreme opposites as they join forces to raise his abandoned granddaughter. Douglas, the Donald Trump of Hollywood, makes enemies of everyone around him, whether it be his unfortunate neighbors or his abused clients. For crude Douglas to all of a sudden change gears just because he finds he has a granddaughter is totally unbelievable. Keaton wines and cries too much, making her open to more than just a few insults. She even cries during nightclub sequences where she unbelievably plays the headliner, with Rob Reiner as her manager. In a few scenes, stage and screen veteran Frances Sternhagen steals the film as Douglas's wise but acerbic secretary. "You think you invented men being assholes?", she asks him, and boy, is it time that somebody took him down. Pretty to look at, it just defies believability and ends up a dud among late middle age sex comedies. I don't believe for a minute that Keaton would allow Douglas to seduce her. The little girl is decent and not too cloying, but no matter how hard he tries, Douglas ain't no W.C. Fields.

The story itself is pretty simple. The characters are kind of simple too (at least the one played by Michael Douglas). But the way they play (off each other), is phenomenal. There is something to the actors, which we know they are able to charm us and that they have the ability to take things to another level. And that is what they are doing here, elevating the movie itself. There have been a couple of movies, where the main character is unlikeable at first. And this "method" makes sense, but only if a really strong actor is playing that role. Some things might go a bit too smooth, but overall you know where this is going. It's a nice movie, with overall good acting and superb acting by our two leads.

38 years ago Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" broke all sorts of records for being unique and entertaining. Diane Keaton played a pivotal role in that movie as the lead character Annie Hall. It seems Ms Keaton has frozen herself into that role and brings that same quirkiness to every role she's played since than, whether it requires it or not. In "And So It Goes" she doesn't require that weirdness and its a total distraction throughout this movie and why I'm rating the movie a 1. Keaton has traded her Hamburg for a Panama and graciously went sans the mens tie and vest this time around. Michael Douglas does hold up his part but Rob Reiner appears to be trying throughout this movie to direct and produce a knockoff of "Annie Hall". Reiner lets Ms Keaton do her frozen best. This movie is tedious and has the speed of a thick molasses in January. You'll fall asleep a number of times watching "And So It Goes", for most of us doing that provides some much needed relief. I was waiting for Keaton to blurt out "Lottee Da" at any moment while watching this stinker of a movie. Instead we get her caterwauling like a Bluetick hound dog chasing a raccoon. Horrible singing, just horrible.

Well, finally a movie for us adults with no F words, car chases, explosions, vampires, aliens or other 'special effects'....Great....AND SO IT GOES isn't the best film of the year and yes, it does have its clichés, but it's a wonderful film just the same. Michael Douglas has rarely been better and Diane Keaton....is well...Diane Keaton...but a little less quirky than usual. Surprised how well she sings. A few heart tugging scenes, some laughs and serious moments make this a must see for the 'older generation' I"m afraid the younger generation would be bored and hoping for some big car crash or super-hero to invade the area. And heavens to betsy...no nude scenes!!! Story is very similar to AS GOOD AS IT GETS, with a few twists. But that's OK. Just enjoy this fine film for what it is. A feel gooder!!!
