In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

Blending excellent reporting and strong storytelling, this is a disturbing film truly stranger than fiction

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

1895 In Formosa is a movie about the Sino-Japanese war in Taiwan. The story is about the guerrilla resistance of Taiwan against the Japanese army. The Qing army loses the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 to Japan and Taiwan is ceded as payment. Xing rises to lead the Hakka army to fight the Japanese army that is about to land on Taiwan. The militia turns to fight a guerrilla war and they do keep the Japanese army from going south. Lacking ration, money and weapons, the militia gathers all fighting force available and become ready to fight a decisive war against the Japanese. The film is simple and not much goes on in it except the battles between the Chinese and the Japanese army. Aside from that, the characters involved are simplified that makes the movie less interesting to the viewer. The acting is good but not excellent nor great. Also, all the other aspects of the film are good as well like cinematography and direction. But overall, it is far from a classic and excellent historical movie. Inspite of that, the movie wasn't not a boring one at all. I give this a 8 out of 10 rating. This film provides good entertainment especially those who loves movies about Asian history.
