Highly Overrated But Still Good

It is not only a funny movie, but it allows a great amount of joy for anyone who watches it.

I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

13 Eerie is not Citizen Kane, but then it does not hold itself out to be. The film is a totally decent entry in the ever-expanding zombie genre and features the strikingly alluring and always interesting actress Katherine Isabele (Ginger Snaps) who does not appear to have aged a day in two decades. Surely she would be starring in main stream Hollywood cinema had she the right connections.Writer/Director George Romero pretty well covered and exhausted the zombie concept with Night Of The Living Dead (1968) and Dawn Of The Dead (1978.) There have however, been a few additional movies which have added additional and novel dimensions to the concept, such as Shatter Dead (1994), Les Revenants (2004), and The Vanguard (2008.) 13 Eerie does't break new ground; typical to the genre the theme is the usual evasion, pursuit, and fight for life from and against the undead. But 13 Eerie IS eerie and sinister, unfolding its events against an overcast, dark blue-grey sky, during those late November days in which decaying autumn leaves on wooded hillsides take on that purplish color. It's an isolated landscape of forgotten outbuildings, hex signed old barns, and dead winter trees; a place where every window faces away from the sun. This movie is a first full length release effort from the writer, and on a par with Corman's production of FF Coppola's first try, Dementia (1963). I.E, it shows promise for the filmmakers. 13 Eerie is well produced and technically executed in a professional manner -which is to say, that while it is a modest and unremarkable feel. The acting is decent, the premise is acceptable, and the zombies are as original in appearance as they can be for a niche which has been so exploited. This movie doesn't take itself too seriously, yet avoids the trap of being campy and silly. Enjoy the well-fitted electronic musical score and the plethora of gruesome makeup special effects. The icky, gory sequences are presented with enough originality to make you squirm in your seat as if someone grabbed your hand and dragged your fingernails down a chalkboard.

People are stupid. Some people are very stupid. Usually, characters in horror films are at least slightly stupid, otherwise they wouldn't constantly get entangled in the mess that fuels the drama. But when the leads are six forensic undergrads who embark on a scientific expedition, you expect a certain degree of sense. Their project takes them to a remote island that was once used as illegal biological testing grounds for life-term prisoners. When we get our first glimpses of what remains of these prisoners, the effects are stomach churning. Also, the Canadian woods used as location used are pleasingly bleak and bathed in winter crispness. To their credit, the undergrads do many things right here; it's just that the walking dead keep on coming. There are many, many zombies in popular entertainment currently, and as is often the case, their ubiquity has reduced their effectiveness. Rather like the found footage genre, there are still effective stories to be told, but you have to search for them.I enjoyed '13 Eerie' a lot. Although it is all played straight, I suspect the effects planners had a great deal of fun conjuring up the imaginative ways in which people/zombies are impaled, stabbed, mangled and injured. The results are joyfully convincing. The ending is especially amusing – when the credits come crashing in, it's hard not to laugh out loud. Intentional horror is rare in these kind of films, and it works very well here. The zombie creatures are very detailed and suitably gruesome, but their torso/body-suits occasionally let them down, betraying a certain bulkiness or fold in the fabric. But they are a force to be reckoned with – they run, snarl and hiss, indicating their infection has given them a certain primal ferocity. On a personal note, I have watched a lot of horror films recently that have struck me as banal and formulaic and it made me wonder if I was becoming over-familiar, or tired of the genre. Luckily for me, an enjoyable experience like '13 Eerie' has restored my faith and enthusiasm.

This is one of the most powerful horror films of the last decade. Gifted director Lowell Dean has brought a creative vision to this work that's electric in its intensity. With an inspired screenplay by Christian Piers Betley, it is an original, fresh look at a genre which too often utilizes zombie like creatures simply due to lack of ideas. In this thrilling film, the threat of being slaughtered by flesh craving monsters is given new energy and becomes something entirely different than anything before. The suspense and terror are incredible and at times overwhelming. Unrelenting in its horror, this is a motion picture meant for audiences tolerant of graphic, stomach churning imagery. Some of the scenes are unholy in their nature and are undeniably haunting. Director Dean is certainly a talent to be reckoned with and a creative force bound to for cinematic greatness.

I'm not sure if it's a spoiler but I'll say that the location that this film was shot at is an abandon wild animal park in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They did a great job making it look like an abandon prison except there was never an actual prison in the movie, probably because the location has been vacant for 20 years. The building where one of the bodies were found are actually public washrooms, tagged by me and my friends. HA! Decent B movie, if it wasn't for the strong cast line up, I'd have given it a 4 instead of 6. Really good work on the reanimated corpses, and lots of great make up. More movies should be shot in this location, as they used a lot of tightly framed shots. The whole Vally is quite beautiful in a creepy way. If you've ever been to the wild animal park, I recommend watching this movie and see how much of the old park you can remember. Kill scene in the monkey cage was my favourite.
